The lab actually tests "your" tumor cells against the drug agents (in this case, PARP inhibitors). How do "your" cancer cells (not population studies) respond in the presence of various drug agents. Do they die or not? They measure the net effect of all the processes going on within the cancer, acting with and against each other in "real-time" (prospectively) and test living (fresh) cells (not dead cells) actually exposed to the drugs and drug combinations of interest. The key to understanding the genome is understanding how cells work. How is the cell being killed, regardless of the mechanism. Both genomics and proteomics may identify potential therapeutic targets (that's good), but these targets still require the determination of cellular endpoints (point of termination) in "drug selection."
