Vitamin C Antagonizes Cancer Chemotherapeutics 10/2/2008

Using a murine model, researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center have shown that vitamin C decreases the efficacy of cancer chemotherapeutic agents. While the researchers anticipated that only those agents which utilized oxygen free radicals as a means to invoke apoptosis would be affected, it was shown that all chemotherapeutic agents tested were so affected. Specifically, tumor cells pre-treated with vitamin C exhibited 30-70% less killing than untreated tumor cells.
