I think you can make your Facebook account pretty private - you just have to be aware of setting it when you set up your account. You can make it so people can search for you on Facebook if they know your email or name, or not allow people to search for you.

Even if you allow yourself to be searchable, people can not view your full profile until they send you a Friend request and you agree to it. And you can grant certain Friends certain privileges.

For example, my friend's daughter who is college age allows her mother to see only certain parts of her profile...doesn't want her mom to know everything she's up to!
