You need calcium and magnesium (and Vitamin D) to build healthy bone but I stand by my "taking them separately".
Unless you are using calcium and magnesium to relax the muscles to help you sleep, they should be taken separately. This is especially true if you do not eat enough greens (the best natural source of magnesium) and are deficient in magnesium. Calcium absorption overtakes that of magnesium. And since magnesium is more highly water soluble than calcium, then it is washed out of the body before it can be utilized.
Calcium also greatly inhibits the uptake of iron (hence eating the kosher way of not mixing meat and dairy). The body so preferentially uptakes calcium over other metals (yes, they are atomically metals - magnesium too) that iron and others are wasted.
