I can relate to this question as I have a 5 year old daughter. I would keep her at home. Main reason being that I would be worried about not being able to easily get her because of roads being closed. It would bother me. Because your son is only 6, it isn't the end of the world if he misses a day of school, esp 1st day back from vacation, day of such a big event in your town (funeral) and you son's birthday. Probably a higher percentage of children will be absent anyway due to the funeral. That is just what I would do.
