Pain medication allergy, issues

Hoping some of you supremely knowledgable folks might have some suggestions.

My mother-in-law suffers from several medical issues which cause her a considerable amount of pain. Unfortunately she has not been able to successfully take any pain medications. Everything she has tried makes her severely nauseous and gives her migraines. Her doctors have suggested she may be allergic to the pain meds. She has taken anti-nausea meds with the pain meds which has helped, but she still suffered the migraines.

Has anyone had any experience with a transdermal patch or other type of approach that might be helpful to her? Maybe a change in method of Administration might help?

Looking for anything that might help.

Many thanks.

Re: Pain medication allergy, issues

Rhonda, I have been treated by a homeopathic doctor who is also a certified nutritionist for nearly 7 years now, with the blessing of my G.P. and my oncologist (when I was in active treatment- Herceptin/Tamoxifen/Femara).

I suffered terribly from fibromyalgia, and was taking Lyrica which did help but I wanted to get off it because of side effects. I am taking 2 homeopathic remedies, Rhus Tox and Arnica every day - my fibromyalgia has improved probably 90%. I take other remedies too for various other issues, and let me tell you, I feel much better. I am eating better (do a daily green juice every morning) - many foods cause inflammation which is the source of various ills. I know some people think homeopathy is hocus pocus, but hey, if you've tried everything else (conventional medicine), why not consider it. My homeopathic dr. works with my GP, they consult together about their common patients.

Just a thought.

all the best

Re: Pain medication allergy, issues

Hi Rhonda,

The patch is designed to give the drug over an extended period of time (so you don't have the ups and downs with the dose) and if she's really allergic to the drug, the patch will likely cause the same problem. Not an MD, but worked for the company that developed the patch. But it may be worth a try as some of the ingredients used to make a tablet won't be in the patch. I'm actually allergic to the dye in OTC Benadryl (which is supposed to take away allergic reactions!). I find taking Benadryl IV not be a problem, but if taken as a tablet, I itch like crazy.

There are also a lot of different pain medications out there. She may just have to try different ones.

Best of luck to your Mom.
