Kidney function and CT scans
Does anyone know if ct scans of the lungs abdomen and pelvis can damage the kidneys? My onc said I have borderline damage from last blood test. I know the techs always say to drink a lot of water after these scans. I have had many over the past 7 years. Concerned! Thanks Cathy

The short answer is yes - but I have no idea of how much exposure could cause real damage. Another price we have to pay?

Re: Kidney function and CT scans
Hi
You need to tell the person doing the next scan about your kidney function. If is a minor decrease it may not matter. The contrast medium injected can damage the kidneys, but there are new versions of this medium which virtually eliminate the risk. Rarely the contrast can cause an allergic reaction (often to iodine in the medium). People with diabetes, pre-existing kidney problems or who are dehydrated are at increased of kidney problems from the contrast. Hope that helps. The risk is low but I would ask the xray people.
