About Dr. Susan Love

Here's an article that appeared in Tuesday's Science Times section of The New York Times. As many of you know, Dr. Love was diagnosed and treated for leukemia.

Quote:

While Dr. Love has always been a strong advocate for women undergoing cancer treatment, she says her disease and treatment has strengthened her understanding of what women with breast cancer and other types of cancer go through during treatments.

“There are little things like having numb toes or having less stamina to building muscles back up after a month of bed rest,” she said. “There is significant collateral damage from the treatment that is underestimated by the medical profession. There’s a sense of ‘You’re lucky to be alive, so why are you complaining?’ ”

Amen and +1. I wish we would hear more from docs who prescribe these drugs who have also had to undergo treatment. It would be eye-opening.

yes thanks to her book, I was able to have a better idea of what to expect from the surgery, etc. including knowing that they was a morphine drip by the bed, something no one told me about but I had read about in her book!!! I hope she does well and recovers we need doctors like her.

Interestingly too, back when I was diagnosed and physicians were broadly prescribing the most common version of estrogen and/or estrogen and a progestin to women dealing with menopausal issues, Dr. Love pretty much stood alone in recognizing that there was a need for caution with that broad usage, and took a lot of flak for saying so. It turned out that she was right about that.

I also read her book from cover to cover when I was home recuperating from my mastectomy/immediate DIEP flap reconstruction, before starting chemotherapy.

Dr. Love is wonderful at conferences and has a great sense of humor.

Jackie, thanks for the link.
