Insurance company personnel - Funny stuff!

I called my insurance company (Blue Shield CA) to find out what my benefit is for a mastectomy bra and after about 35 minutes, she finally came back on the line to inform me they don't have any benefit for "vasectomy bras"! I then had to actually spell out "mastectomy" as she had no idea what it is. Took over an hour to find out I do have a benefit (4/year) but still no answer as to any restrictions on where I should purchase them.

It was a funny start to my day ..... and the representative was a woman!!! I think we still have a ways to go on awareness??!!

Check with Dillards, and also whom ever is your durable medical supplier for your insurance company.

don't we just love people, who are responsible for our "permission to use our benefits" but do not have a clue!! That is a very one though.

take care

When I called Blue Shield again today, the gentleman representative told me my primary care physician and not my plastic surgeon needs to prescribe the mastectomy bra medication for me.

Sheesh ... I did then get a little testy (I'm now at phone call #4) and asked him if he had any clue what a "bra" was? When he didn't answer I said "it's a woman's undergarment that you started trying to get into and undo to get to second base when you were 13 years old... it's not a medication".

I believe you will have to have a prescription for your bra. (I know sounds strange!) my onc has always written my prescriptions for me.

Thanks Rhonda. I now have a Blue Shield personal nurse advocate who's job is to overcome these hurdles for me.

Congrats on your NED. And I don't even know what NED stands for but I know it's a good thing!

Funny, but so pathetic. I worked for a major health insurance carrier for 30 years so I know the business well. Sadly, right after I was diagnosed, the customer service department that handles employee/disability/retiree inquiries was eliminated---so no phone number to call, no one to send a letter. The few times I got through, they wouldn't talk to me because they didn't handle employee benefits/coverage - What a @#$#@#$ mess! It took 3 years of repeated claim submissions and letters from me to get my claim processed. With health care reform---it's only going to get worse!
