Sanjay Gupta talks about Metformin

I watched the Sanja Gupta, MD show on CNN Saturday at 4:30 and he talked about Metformin, a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. He talked about this very inexpensive (pennies a day) drug being effective as a cancer treatment for cancers including breast and pancreatic. Does anyone have any information on this or thoughts? I am wondering if such an available drug would be worth a shot for those with not too many options left.

Hi Cathy There are quite a few Metformin trials going in Toronto at the present time. I believe Princess Margaret and perhaps Mt. Sinai. On my last visit to my oncologist I had asked if I could go into the trial because they are looking for early stage breast cancer but you had to have been diagnosed not more than a year previously. I am four years out now so did not qualify. I suppose when these trials do concur that they help prevent recurrence it should be available to all. I believe quite a few women on the boards are taking metformin. Lois

Hi there,

I'm doing one of the Metformin trials. The trial is non-exclusive so I plan on also doing the vaccine trial once I am done with Herceptin. The drug is quite easy to tolerate. I have had very few side effects. The only noticeable one is I feel like I have been sucking on a quarter and I get thirsty often.

I am wondering if a clinical trial is needed. Why not just get a gp to prescribe this drug. It's very available, cheap and it doesn't sound like there are many side effects. Why not?
