Sore Throat and Radiation

Looking for advice: I started Rads 3 weeks ago and from day 2- I started noticing a sore throat. It started out as just a tender spot to now it hurts to swallow. On Monday the dr did a scope to see if I had any blisters- they saw nothing.

I have tried the Magic Mouth wash and Carafate, Nothing is fazing it even taking 800mg advil.

They are wanting to send me to a ENT - so while I am waiting on that anyone have similar or suggestions to try in the meantime.

Hi and I was told to expect a sore throat and some coughing after approx ten days of rads and that it was normal! I did see an ENT myself for other issue's and that thankfully was nothing sinister so good luck!

Thanks Tricia- I was told the same but this sore throat is worse than any I have had. I am in awful pain swallowing and pain up into my ear all the time .
When I was on FEC I had mucusitis (sp?) the mouth and throat covered in blisters stuff.

I got my ENT apt for the 27th but I'm not sure if I can last that long.

Cont-plating stabbing my ear with a Qtip and drinking a gallon of VODKA to see if they will work if this dont go away soon . Just a Thought..lol

Lol poor you and hope you feel better soon, maybe your Familt Dr can prescribe something to ease it while you're waiting for the appt??
It could be an infection I think!

Re: Sore Throat and Radiation

Hello- I had radiation to my spine for 10 days- they shoot down through the esophagus which was already giving me a hard time from chemo. So after trying Carafate and a GI cocktail and getting very little relief, my onc gave me a script for Oxycontin. That finally numbed the spot. I needed very little of it (I am a lightweight) and after a few weeks it slowly healed. I have not needed anything since then other than a proton pump inhibitor for the acid reflux I still encounter. I hope this helps!! Good luck to you! I know the pain is miserable... but you will get past it!
