"Women in their 40s with no family history of breast cancer are just as likely to develop invasive breast cancer as are women with a family history of the disease, according to a study presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). These findings indicate that women in this age group would benefit from annual screening mammography. "

I certainly have benefitted from annual screening mammography (seemed the BC was found during the first ever mammogram in my life.) I am the only one in my 'blood' family that's been diagnosed with breast cancer so far. Although the HNPCC cluster might explain the three cancer incidents (NHL, CC, BC) out of 8 family members (I have 5 older siblings.) Mother's Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma was diagnosed and treated 5 years before I began my BC journey. 2nd Brother's Colon Cancer was discovered around the time when my recurrence was found.

[Ironically they are the ones who used to always nag me about my health problems. Turned out 'we are family...' :)]

Thank God for this study, Jean. Thanks for this welcomed post! I just think it is nuts to speak of eliminating Mammos or pushing back their recommended onset ages. So many of us here have been saved by mammos that these cost saving recommendations send me into spasms of frothing at the mouth fury! Honestly, what defense do we have against this disease if mammograms are taken away or recommended to begin at a later age? What? So we must be relegated back to the stone age of self breast exams? Oh, there's a winner! I would be toast had not my 9th routine mammo found calcifications that prompted a biopsy. I literally thank God for mammograms. Until there is something better, I say, " give us our mammos at forty or condemn us to certain death!"

BTW, yes, I am standing on this most sturdy soap box I found at a wonderful flea market in Lancaster County.....

Thanks for this post, Jean!!! From one whose invasive bc was picked up in a mammo, with no history of cancer in family, AND BRCA+. I think we ALL should get a complimentary BRCA screening along with our diagnoses...instead of having to beg the oncologist for a referral and having to pay for it...oh wait, I am on MY soapbox now!!!

I am a Hershey gal, but LOVE Lancaster county! My mother-in-law loves Shady Maple. I want to meet up with Barb up in Sullivan County (Barb, I am still planning on arranging that) maybe we can meet for lunch in Lancaster. No shortage of yummy eateries there!
