Is it ok to have dental check up while on Zometa?
 

I missed my last 6th month dental check up as I was feeling fairly rough at the time. I have had just 2 zometa treatments so far. Is it ok for me to go to the dentist now? I am fairly sure I just need a scale and polish but I have a bridge and crowns and want to make sure I'm ok. Does anyone have any information?

I work at a periodontal office & one of our doctors has done lots of research on this. From what I know, the chances of osteonecrosis of the jaw are extremely rare. But if you need any invasive dental work - like a tooth extraction or surgery - you should get clearance from your MD. Sometimes they hold the zometa for a couple weeks or so. I hope this was helpful! But it's super important to take care of your teeth brush & floss every day. Gail

I was told to inform my onc or one of the chemo nurses, and also inform the dentist that I had had zometa!
I also was told the risk is small but there is a risk so it's important to check with your onc first!

Thanks Gail and Tricia. I'm glad to hear its so rare, of course my imagination goes into overdrive over everything. I will make an appointment!!

I have had an apicoectomy, a root canal and an extraction all while on Zometa (at different times). It was just a matter of my dentist, my oral surgeon, or my endodontist having good, serious knowledge about bisphosphenates and zolendrinate acids... all of my dental professionals talked to my oncologist ahead of time and scheduled my procedures based on my Zometa treatments, and the occasional Zometa treatment was postponed for appropriate time after a procedure. I did just fine.

Zometa - Tell your dentist - and no drilling or digging around the gums - just cleaning
