Steer clear of soy supplements (For hormone + breast cancer)

October is bursting with breast cancer articles, and I recently came across one that contained a tidbit of something I was not aware; the info came from the article posted below, that makes reference to soy foods being OK to consume, but to avoid the supplements. It says:

7. Steer clear of soy supplements.

Soy contains isoflavones, which can act like estrogen in your body and potentially stimulate the growth of certain types of breast cancer, explains Dr. Seema A. Khan, a professor of surgery and co-leader of the breast cancer program at Northwestern University in Chicago. Supplements usually contain more concentrated doses of isoflavones, so experts recommend avoiding them. But soy foods _ edamame, soy milk, tofu _ are fine.

Here is the rest of the article, if you care to read it:

I still plan to avoid soy foods!

Barbara,
I avoid soy as much humanly possible. Not long after I was dx I kept hearing we should avoid soy. That's when I started reading labels every time I shopped and I soon learned that soy seems to be in almost everything. It's hard to avoid it totally...but I do my best. :)

Thanks for sharing that with us.

Re: Steer clear of soy supplements (For hormone + breast cancer)

You are right; it is very hard to avoid because it is found in all kinds of foods and supplements. But when I read this article that claimed that soy was OK to consume when it is in a food, I felt a little better about buying a product that lists soy in the ingredients, although I prefer that it not be there, at all. Adding to the misery of having to read what is written on every package/ box, is the fact that often the writing on the label is so small that it is almost impossible to read.

It was after reading about soy on this board, that I checked the labels on my supplements, and found that 3 of them.,..Co Q-10, Fish Oil, VitaminD3...contained soy. But not anymore...

There is a long list of foods contaning natural estrogen, which includes nearly all common food we use not just soy. Also there is a short list of estrogen inhibiting foods. I found that info in Google.

With love
