ECCO Barcelona meeting--new standard of care for first line metastatic bc treatment?

Patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer lived just as long, but with significantly less toxicity, when treated with vinorelbine (Navelbine) and trastuzumab (Herceptin) than with docetaxel (Taxotere) and trastuzumab, a randomized trial showed.
Patients who began metastatic therapy with the vinorelbine regimen had a median overall survival of 39 months versus 36 months with the docetaxel doublet, a nonsignificant difference.

Time to progression also trended in favor of vinorelbine-trastuzumab, and time to treatment failure was significantly better (P<0.0001), Michael Andersson, MD, reported here at the European Breast Cancer Conference.

The vinorelbine regimen was associated with significantly less grade 3-4 leukopenia, febrile neutropenia, infection, fever, neuropathy, nail changes, and edema.
