Anybody used Herceptin with Avastin

Is anybody using Herceptin with Avastin? How effective is it? I am currently on Herceptin and Tykerb(for the second time) and my recent scan shows increase in uptake in the same mediastinal nodes(they didn't increase in size just he SUV). My onc. is asking me to wait till the next scan after two months. I am little nervous and want to see other non-chemo options. Please let me know if you used Avastin with Herceptin.

Thanks,
Julie

Julie, I have not used that combo of drugs...but maybe this link Rich posted today might help you? It just so happens Dr. Slamon talks about Herceptin/Avastin in this article. I copied and pasted the one section for you if interested.

Dennis Slamon, a University of California, Los Angeles, oncologist who was part of the team that developed Herceptin back in the1980s, is enthusiastic about combining it with Genentech’s vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor, Avastin (bevacizumab). Dr. Slamon points out that the two pathways are linked. When HER2 is amplified, “one of the pathways that consistently goes up is VEGF,”he says. Trials of the combination (Avastin plus Herceptin) have been encouraging. In phase 2 trials, “the two antibodies alone, with no chemo, are giving objective response rates in
54% of women with metastatic disease.” Used at earlier stages, Slamon believes the combination could be even more powerful and he is optimistic that this regimen will eventually be tested in a phase 3 trial without concomitant chemotherapy.

Just in case you want the entire link Rich posted for this I will include it.

Interesting... when I was on taxol/avastin for several months my onc. took me off herceptin for that time. If I knew why I don't remember the reason he gave me.

Hi Julie, I ran across this video about Herceptin/Avastin & it made me think of you. It's a clip from the nightly news about a young lady that had one of the most severe cases they had seen. Her tumor had eaten through her chest wall. Very advanced. She was given two months to live until Dr. Glaspy from UCLA offered her the Herceptin/Avastin. It worked fantastic on her and she is doing great. The woman had almost no side affects either...other then some fatigue. I found this very encouraging and uplifting in case you want to check it out I provided the link for you.

That is my new combo since I had progression with Herceptin Tykerb...same nodes. So far so good, this is my second time on Avastin, hoping it works as well as it did last time...seems I am off to a good start! Just make sure you monitor your Blood Pressure...it can cause it to rise...i have been on meds ever since!

Just wanted to say that I'm in the BETH trial that you're all talking about. Had my final infusion of Herceptin and Avastin last week and am feeling fine. I think my muscle aches and pains are due to the Femara that I'm taking for the next 4 1/2 years at least I hope that's all it is!
This is my first post although I've been stopping in every now and again since my DX in 12/08. I'm a real newbie at this - how do you get your DX information on your posts?

Tykerb enhances the antivascular activity of Avastin

Tykerb (lapatinib) enhances the antivascular activity of Avastin (bevacizumab). There was a slide presentation at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Breast Cancer Symposium on September 5, 2008.

Re: Anybody used Herceptin with Avastin

I was diagnosed with her2 positive stage 3c er/pr negative breast cancer in Janusry 2008. I took AC, Taxotere, herceptin and avastin. I continued geting herceptin & avastin for 10 more months after my mastectomy and radiation. In June 2010 I celebrated one year of being cancer free. I don't know if it was the Herceptin, the Avastin or the combination. but my tumors started to shrink after the first treatment.

I hope this gives you some HOPE.

Mary
