Off topic: furious at my doctor
I am asking the opinion of my sisters on this group, because we have a LOT of experience with doctors. I saw my GP on June 24. She said I seemed really healthy. Last week I joined a medical-center-based weight loss and maintenance program. It includes a fitness evaluation at the gym on the third floor of the medical center's rehabilitation center, where people exercise to recover from strokes and heart attacks. So there were plenty of medical people around. I had to have my GP's permission to have the fitness evaluation. She wouldn't give it to me until she examined me first. I am angry because I see her every six months and my oncologist every other six months, and I just saw her one month ago. Am I angry for no reason.

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
This is a typical CYA move and why health care costs so much----bring back some common sense I say.

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
Ask your GP to explain.

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
I would be angry too! You'd just seen her weeks ago, easily within a reasonable time. One has to have a pre-op examine no longer than 30 days before a surgery.... this was about the same timeframe for you and you were only doing something to enhance your health.

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
NO, you are not angry for no reason...what is wrong with our system that lets stuff like this go on? And the foolish part is that your insurance would probably pay for you to go back to the doctor for no reason, as you JUST saw her...while they won't pay for testing/procedures, etc. that might make our lives a little more manageable. I would ask your GP why...and I would also take it up to the highest level of whoever she works for...and if you need a posse...just holler! xo Suzan

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
i think i'd have been angry too! you should have your pcp explain why.

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
Don't be angry - but be frustrated and let her know what an inconvenience this is. Call her and tell her that you expect her to do this ASAP. She has no reason to BS you and the program this way, you need to tell her so.

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
I agree Mjo that this is a CYA tactic...I wuld call and take the paperwork over, get it filled out and there should not be a charge! Sometimes you have to take control with situations like this! Hopefully the office/Dr will work with you!

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
I'd feel just as irritated. It is hard enough to keep a positive attitude in seeking out ways to stay on top of cancer, including ones that take time and money and effort when it would be a lot more comfortable to just take it easy.
The one question in my mind is, a doctor has relationships with a never-ending run of people and while for us the memory of our last visit with the doc is pretty clear, theirs is by a month later more of a blur. I don't know what the doc was thinking, but your chart isn't in front of her and something vague that might actually be about another patient may have been what triggered it for her. I work with my PCP so I've been guilty of thinking "he knows what is going on with me, why is he doing it this way?" when in reality I am just one of a lot of people he sees. I've learned not to assume too much about what they remember about me when my chart isn't in front of them. A.A. |
Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
This is frustrating. At the beginning of my chemo I found about an organization called Team Survivor that offers free workouts to cancer survivors. I had to have a medical form signed, and my oncologist signed it with no problem. It had been just under 3 weeks since he had seen me. He didn't want to examine me first.
I do believe it is a CYA problem. When I had my hysterectomy in October I was astounded at one of the myriad of forms that I had to sign. It was a form that stated that I was fully aware that by having a total hysterectomy I would never be able to get pregnant ever again! DUH!!! Besides, I was 52 at the time. My goodness. The nurse said she was aware of a case where a woman had a hysterectomy, then found a lawyer to take her case and she sued the doctor because she was now infertile . . . AND SHE WON! As long as we have a court system that allows things like this to happen I fear our Dr.'s will continue to give us unneeded tests and require us to come in for unnecessary exams. |
Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
I agree with Alice - and the more I think about it, it is probably a CYA strategy. And until we have tort reform, docs will continue to cover their butts, because they have to.

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
I had my appointment, got an EKG and discussed "exercise asthma" with her. Told her how I felt. She smiled and listened. Thanks for letting me blow off steam.

Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
I'd been angry also, what a waste of time and money.
Good luck with weight program. Oh, and what does CYA mean by the way? |
Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
I figured it out. I think it's the same as CYB - Cover your butt.
|
Re: Off topic: furious at my doctor
CYA = "Cover your ass", and it this case it we contend that it refers to the doctor's need to protect themselves from lawsuits.
