A co-worker of mine who is a recent breast cancer survivor told me that HER oncologist does not offer her a gown when she sees him, he puts his arms around her and takes her bra off and pulls her shirt up to examine her then after the exam, reaches around again and hooks her bra up and pulls her shirt down. Am [B]I[B] being a prude by saying that THAT is weird? Do any of YOUR docs do this? Thanks. Take care and God bless.

I find this awfully STRANGE behavior! You are not being a "prude" - this could be construed as sexual harrassment.

Did she ask for a gown and say that she prefers to undress and dress herself?? If she did this and the answer was negative, I would REPORT this person for unprofessional and indecent behavior under the guise of a medical exam!

Maybe he should be reported anyway.

I agree with Steph. I've seen lots of doctors in my 58! years - male and female - and have never experienced anything even close to this.

I agree with the comments already posted. I have a female oncologist and I'm always asked if I would like to change into a gown. I think that the behavior of your friend's oncologist totally crosses the line of professionalism.

UMMM Yes, Strange in pervert kind of way.

I am always given a gown, and when ever my ONC is in the room he has his nurse with him as well.

Very weird, I don't consider myself prudish but would feel extremely uncomfortable in this situation.

I think this is definitely out of line and your friend should never go back there. I would be interested if he did this to all his patients. Maybe someone should report this guy.

Also, a nurse should be present whenever an exam is
being performed.

Weird. Creepy about the onc. taking the bra off and on. However, I do have to add that I saw a PS, originally from Holland, who specializes in reconstruction , and he told me that in his country women do not change into gowns before an examination - they just strip down and the dr. walks into the examination room.

Had to chuckle as you mentioned about Holland.
That country by the way is extremely liberal compared to the US...haveing an open expression on sex, soft drugs. So, it is not surprising that patients do not wear growns...

If you have never traveled to Amsterdam it is a trip!
Holland is a beautiful country but so different from
home.

I would be finding a new onc and definitely letting him know what I thought about his "ethics".

For me this raises another question.

I wonder just how many oncs who are so clinical that they could not bring themselves to touch their patients are considered "more professional"?

But I agree -- unless it is a country where gowns are considered wasteful practice or not used generally for all patients in clinics, something should be provided to provide some personal dignity.
