Another hospital stay for madubois63...

Yup! I just can't believe it. This past Tuesday I had my Herceptin with Benadryl. My counts were totally amazing (for me). I felt amazing. I fell asleep after getting the Benadryl and slept through most of the infusion. When I woke up, it felt like I slept the wrong way bending my neck. It wasn't that big of a deal. Half way home, the pain became unbearable through my neck, to my shoulder and left arm and also through my left breast (tram flap reconstruction site). My breathing became very labored very quickly, scaring me to the core. I got home and took 2 Oxycontin tabs. I tried to cook dinner thinking I could keep my mind off the pain. I finally relented and called my mom to finish cooking dinner. The meds didn't even touch the pain, if anything it got worse. I couldn't eat or breath, and I contemplated the ER for a bit. My son finally talked me in to going. He called my onc and then we (mom, my son and my daughter) all drove to the other hospital in my area. They took me in immediately and hooked me up to monitors. I then had every test possible. I got dilautin to ease the pain and was brought to a room at 5 in the morning. I then had every test I didn't have the night before and repeated some of the tests too. Everything came back negative. They ruled out heart attack and insisted I had a clot (possibly from the abscess from the week before). All the test came back negative and after three days, they finally let me go home. I believe that my recent problems all go back to the fall I took over a month ago (the amazing full straddle split). All the pain and the abscess are on my left side. I feel much better now. Actually I feel really good. I went to a cancer patient appreciation day event for yet another hospital in my area today. It was a free lunch, some give-a-ways and just great day. My friend Liz won a door prize that was absolutely beautiful. It was a fall themed basket with 2 bottles of win, lots of fall/Halloween decor, candles and a $50 gift certificate to Barnes and Nobles. My other friend Carole won a gift certificate to a bakery and also a tray of Italian cookies. I didn't win anything today, but I won a day at a spa from a raffle at my cancer center the other day. It is a full day of massage, a facial, reflexology and lunch. The woman that registers everyone as you walk in entered my name in to the raffle. How nice is that??? So that's all for now. I am really trying to stay away from hospitals...

Sorry to hear about your most recent hospital stay and all the pain you had to endure. So happy to hear you are feeling so much better. You have certainly had enough already. I can understand you trying to stay away from hospitals and I hope you succeed at doing so. I don't know anyone else who has fought their way back as many times as you. You are amazing and I am in awe of you. Please stay well.

Maryann....you never cease to throw these surpises our way!!! Well, I am glad to hear at least that your test results all came back neg. And thank goodness the pain has diminished and you are feeling good and good enough to go to that function and have a really good time.
What a strange and frightening situation though! I wonder if the injury in your fall somehow resulted in pressure on a bundle of nerves creating that pain. Who knows....but thank goodness you are back to being ok again. whew....
take care!!!!! take it easy sometimes too!!
Love, Maryanne

MaryAnn - wow, you sure are getting creative on finding new and interesting ways to get into the hospital! I agree, you should try to stay out for a while. Glad things seem to have resolved...there's got to be a better way to get a day at a spa.

i think we need to just wrap you in bubble wrap so you're protected from everything and never let you out of your room.

Maryann, for someone who's trying to stay out of hospitals you're not very successful lately:)
Thank goodness it was nothing too serious and I hope you have a very relaxing and injury free day at the spa!

Jackie07 09-08-2008 03:54 PM

Yea, enjoy the spa!

Bill 09-08-2008 04:29 PM

Madame Dubois, don't make me come up there! The first thing I'd have to do is throw away those flip-flops and your mop and bucket. I'm glad your pain has gone away. That does sound really scary. Have a good time at the spa, and don't worry about us, we'll be just fine here, all spa-less and all,,,,,,,but that's okay, you go on to the spa without us,,,,,, heck, we don't need no stinkin' spa, anyways, do we guys?

madubois63 09-08-2008 05:30 PM

Thanks everyone. I WILL enjoy the spa. I think at this point I've earned it. Bill, call up local colleges, and massage schools. They give reduced rates or sometimes free massages. Students need to put in so many hours in order to earn their degree. I would bring you with me if I could. I will also take this opportunity to remind every one to ask around. I just made my appointment for my free massage at a spa that gives free services to cancer patients. If you don't know, there is a place that the owners (2 sisters) lost their mom and dad to cancer. So on the third Monday of each month, they close the doors to the general public and take cancer patients for free - haircuts, massages, mani/pedicures, facials...There is a lot of free stuff out there. You just have to look. There are free yoga, art, reiki and other classes being offered. If your cancer center or local hospital doesn't have them, ask if they know of any places that offer them. Also, look in those local health papers you find in the front of the store. I usually find listings for classes in the back of the paper. Love to you all...
