Recommendations for doctors in or around NJ?
Can anyone send along the names of a good oncologist and good surgeon in the Newark, NJ area (this is for an individual who lives in Westfield, NJ)?
Thanks for any help you can provide. Best, Karen |
Dr. Richard Michaelson
St. Barnabas Medical Center Livingston He was Christine's oncologist when we lived in New Jersey. Regards Joe |
I go to the Cancer Institute in New Brunswick N.J. My oncologist is Dr. Deborah Toppmeyer and I am very pleased with her and this entire insitute. There are many surgeons and doctors here and they are all specialists and they are extremely nice, caring and friendly.

To Joe and WomanofSteel,
Thank you so much. I will pass along your information to a good friend, who has a sister-in-law in NJ that we are both concerned about. The sister-in-law's docs thus far have not been taking as good care of her as they should. |
I live in the town next to Westfield and know of Dr. Michaelson very well. I definitely concur with Joe - Michaelson is great and was named one of the top docs by New Jersey Magazine. I did not go to him - wish I did.

I also have Dr. Deborah Toppmeyer and like her a lot. Dr. Susan McManus is considered an excellent breast surgeon. Her office is out of Somerset and does surgery at St. Peters which is a much more patient friendly hospital than Robert Wood Johnson. Many doctors, nurses, and patients hold her in very high regard.

I'm in Westfield. My oncologist is Dr. Bonni Gearhart in the Cancer Center at Overlook.
The surgeon who performed my mastectomy is in NYC - Dr. Eleni Tousimis - she works out of NY Presbyterian/Cornell Medical Center. I liked my NJ surgeon - but the plastic surgeon I used for reconstruction was in NYC - thus needing a doctor in NYC so I could have the mastectomy and reconstruction at the same time. The NJ Sugeon I liked (but didn't use) was Michelle O'Shea - her partner Diana Addis is very good also. she came into her office on Christmas Eve for a friend of mine who was having trouble - brought her kids for the few minutes it took for a quick visit. Both women are very caring. And I can't get the "bold" out of my post today - sorry ??? |
To JSH and Monica,
Thanks so much for this information. I am passing it along. karen |
Lisa1962,
Thanks so much for your help. karen |
Just as an add on to Dr. McManus, when I told her how she was held so highly regarded by her peers and nurses (I heard good things from many people), tears came to her eyes. It reminded me that doctors are people too and need reinforcement just like the rest of us.

Monica,
Thanks for the additional information. Dr. M. sounds great. karen |
Lisa,
My surgeon was Dr. Tousimis as well - lumpectomy. After radiation at Sloan Kettering NJ I went back to the oncologist in NY due to lots of aggrevation over Sloan Kettering billing practices. |
Karen,
For a surgeon I would recommend Dr. Elisa Santoro also at St. Barnabas. regards Joe |
Joe,
Thanks so much for this information. Best, karen |

I remember my dad having billing problems with Sloan. After he died my step mom actually paid some things she didn't need to - just to be done with them. I just saw Dr. Tousimis at the beginning of the month. she was quite pregnant and was due sometime around now. |
Lisa - I saw Dr. Tousimis in April and didn't even realize she was pregnant! I must have been out of it.
Joe - Dr. Santoro does not accept any medical insurance. |
Dr. Tousimis is so efficient and smart - she even does pregnancy well - she was perfectly tiny with a little ball in front of her - it's no wonder you didn't notice two months ago.
If your friend in Westfield wants to PM me that would be fine - we could live on the same block and never know it. Lisa |
Thanks Lisa for your kind offer. I will pass it along.
Take care. karen |
