Those of you who have had the BRCA testing done...can you tell me how long it took for the results? They are telling me three weeks, but I'm hoping to get it sooner. Thanks. How do the results come in? It is a detailed report, or just a plus or minus?

Actually, when I had my test they told me about 5 weeks, so I was surprised when she called me after just 2 weeks and said the results were in. I was negative.

I can't recall how detailed the report was.

My results took about 3 weeks but there was not a detailed report. My center would not give me results by phone I had to have a follow up appt. and all they said was I was not positive for BRCA I or II.

My testing took 3 weeks, and I was given a two page report. I tested negative.

I believe there are two levels of testing that can be done (it has to do with the number of gene sequences looked at). I had the more extensive one done, so perhaps that's the difference in the report length.

Mine took about 3 wks. The report was fairly extensive because i was the first in my family to be tested. My sister's and daughter's testing I believe just came out to pos or neg and this is because they looked at thousands of genes for me and once they found the defect, that is all they had to look for for my sisters and daughter.

Mine took 2 weeks. I got a phone call from the office, then was sent a report. Mine was negative.

Hi there. Mine took about three weeks and I also had to go into the office for results as they said that they could not give them over the phone. Mine were negative, and my original projection was that I had an 88.5% chance of being positive based on my family history and personal history. My report may have been extensive, but I was basically just told that I was negative, and that until new gene discoveries were made, that was all they knew. I saw a genetic counselor and a specialist with treating women's cancers. I was told that as new discoveries were made in the future, that I could be tested again for different genes, that because these results were negative, that that didn't mean that I didn't carry some other gene they hadn't discovered yet. Who knows....... I was very happy to be negative though.

It seems to me that the majority of people who get breast cancer do not carry the gene. What do any of you think?

I was told that most bc is not genetic and I did test negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2. Having said that, I am the 12th documented person on my mom's side of the family to get breast cancer. There are at least 3 - 5 more great aunts that died of cancer but we are not sure if it was bc (probably was) because they were born in the late 1800's.

I was also told by Stanford that it could be a gene that has not been identified yet and as the rest of you were told, when they do identify more genes, I should get tested
again.

Karen--I was told the same thing--that I probably have a mutation they just don't know about and that I should get retested eventually. Like you, on paper I look like a BRCA carrier (father was an Ashkenazi Jew who died of pancreatic cancer), but tested negative. Then I get bc young. So who knows.

I was tested a year ago and the results took about 3 weeks. I had to meet with the doctor/counselor to get the results. My results were inconclusive. I have a "gene variation of undetermined signifigance." I guess I'm not positive or neg. Go figure!
At my last oncology visit I was told there has recently been an improvement to the BRCA testing. There is a new test called "BART" (BRCA Analysis Rearrangement Test) and cost $650. My chance of finding this mutation using BART is probably less than 0.5%. My insurance will cover it, I just need to have the blood drawn.

Colleen had been tested for BRCA because her sister, Kim, also had breast cancer. The results came back in two and a half weeks. Both sisters tested negative. Just really unlucky, I guess.
