good books?
 

Since I am off for summer vacation, I've got some time to myself and wondered if anyone has any good books to recommend? They don't have to be cancer related, as I think I've probably read eveything out there. I do normally read murder mysteries. I am still waiting for your book to come in at the library Grace.

A Few Recommendations
 

Books by author Karen Kingsbury are awesome. Also, the Jan Karon series is wonderful. I am reading Nineteen Minutes right now. It is by Jodi Picoult. A book I read at the beginning of my cancer journey (actually read it through 3 times) is Grace For Each Hour by Mary J. Nelson. She is a cancer survivor. It is a devotional of sorts. It is not your typical breast cancer read. It isn't about breast cancer, per se, but about her experience and how she handled with the help of God. I loved it and highly recommend.

what a treat..
 

my dear freind handed me "Can't Wait to get to Heaven" when I was so depressed and in the midst of treatment. I was kind of shocked at the title considering what I was going through. I read it and laughed out loud all through. What a treat! I had never read a Fannie Flag book and probably wouldn't have normally. It was just what I needed, I followed it up by reading every other book she has written - but this was the best. Have a great summer....

Grace's book
 

Hi -
I just purchased Grace's book "The Last Enemy" yesterday. Got into it a couple chapters last night and am hooked. Very well done.

Also picked up a couple of books by Tracey Chevalier:
"Burning Bright" and "The Lady and the Unicorn" - if you like readings with art history or literary connections.

If you want to get into a real saga - try Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series. These books are long - around 1000 pages. Took me many months to get through all of them. Great reading and her research is well done.

These are all books you can just get "lost" in. Take you out of yourself.

Mysteries
 

I have read all of the books by Laurence Sanders, Sue Grafton, Stewart Woods, and Janet Evanovich. I recommend them all and they are all in paperback.

Reading material - I would not have ordinarily read this but for a firend of mine that recommended it after my first bout with cancer. It has nothing to do with the disease,but everything todo with life, is in novel format ( an easy read) and changed my life dramatically... The Celestine Prophecy the adventure by James Redflied. Ther are two other sequels to it as well - The 10th Insight, and In Search for Shambala.

Hope you get an opportunity to read it.

Cold Mountain, The Good Earth, The Kite Runner, all fabulous and my top three picks if you haven't read them yet.

Like Emelie, I also like the Lawerance Saunders books - especially the "Sins" series. His description of the sandwiches the detective in those series makes for himself really makes you hungry!!

Rebecca is good by Daphne (can't remember the last name of the author). Just because it is my name (the title) is a coincidence. The DaVinci Code is also very thrilling too.

I would have to reiterate Steph's recommendation for the Outlander series - I absolutely could not put them down! Some light and funny reads for the summer - Naked by David Sedaris, anything by Adrianna Triggiani (Queen of the Big Time, Big Stone Gap, Travels with my donkey by Tim Moore (hysterical). Also liked the Memory Keeper's Daughter.

I enjoyed Phillipa Gregory's The Other Boleyn Girl and the Boleyn Inheritance. The Other Boleyn Girl is being made into a movie.

Hi Juanita! I love to share my favorite books. If you want to laught out loud read" Marley and Me", a true story about owning and loving the worst dog possible. OK here's a novel, you know, the kind that you wish it would never end." One Thousand White Women" by Jim Fergus, strange title, but you'll see why. "A Land Remembered", by Patrick Smith. Here's two wonderful biographies, The "Tennis Partner" by Abraham Verghese, a story of friendship and lost and "The Color of Water" by James McBride, a blackman's tribute to his white mother. So take it easy this summer and keep the faith. Carol H.

I like Barbara Kingsolver; Animal Dreams, The Poisonwood Bible, Prodigal Summer to name a few. Also FINALLY finished the Stephen King Dark Tower series...because he FINALLY finished (??!!) writing it! He started it in the 1970's.
