How long to spin a spider web?
 

This is my last resort. I've spent a good two hours looking on the internet to find out how long it takes for a spider to spin a web? Lots of information on spider webs, but not the time involved. Any naturalists out there have an answer. Would be much appreciated.

Hi Grace, I seem to recall that good old Charlotte (from "Charlotte's Web") used to spin her creative webs overnight while Wilbur slept. Is that scientific enough for ya? :)

Are you doing your homework? Maybe try "Ask Jeeves", a website for kids, if it's still around, or try typing the question into google instead of just spider.

I know late in summer, it seems like they do it overnight. If I remember I'll ask my animal planet addicted children in the morning. BB

Melinda, you're a much better Googlier, than I am. I Googled it too and found lots of stuff but nothing with time. It's not welcome news--just one day--as I hoped it took at a minimum two days. I have to prove that someone couldn't have come through a back door because a web is covering it. Spiders and ants are way too energic. It would take me longer than that to get rid of it. Back to the drawing board, and thanks very much Bev and Audrey.

Facinating question. I enjoyed searching the net for it. I also learned they will eat their web as it is good food for them and they gain back some of the energy that went in spinning it.

I once watched a spider start and finish a web. It was the classic web shape, about 8 - 10 inches across, probably had about 6 concentric rings and it took a bit over an hour, maybe an hour and a half.

I used to watch spiders spin their webs on the porch of my cabin in Vermont...it is fascinating. And more than once I walked smack into one when coming home late at night...eeeks!

thanks all, I resolved my problem with a email from Steph, who suggested I put some bugs in the web to age it a bit.

I hope you'll all forgive me for using this like a homework board. Wish I had you guys when I was back in school.
