Tykerb questions....and answers...for early stagers...

Like many of you when Tykerb was recently approved by the FDA
I questioned if Tykerb should be added to my treatment. I noticed
many on the board with questions. I spoke with Dr. Slamon and he
said the following:
"Tykerb is newly approved but just for recurrent Her2 positive breast cancer that has already been treated with trastuzumab. I'm certain that it will also prove effective in the adjuvent setting but those trials need to be performed so there are NO data yet in this setting. It is my hunch that it will be equally effective. As far as CNS recurrence issues are concerned, there are some
very SOFT data indicating that there may be benefit there but it is not very convincing just yet...

Hope this helps! (those early stagers)

Kind Regards,
Jean

Jean, What do you mean by CNS recurrence?

CNS is Central Nervous System....

thanks Jean!!! I had this question at the top of my list when I see my oncologist next month! I am still going to pick her brains on the subject. I feel that as long as we 'early-stagers' remain NED, then we should have everything made available to us so that we may stay this way...and thus help to prove that all the research and women who have so bravely tried out new treatments have not done so in vain.

I asked about Tykerb for early stages as well this week of my onc. He said same thing. Used for those where herceptin is not working.

However, me being the pushy broad, I mention that he needs to make calls to push research forward for the early stagers.

Also one of the doctors in the office sits on the fda approval borad. she actually worked to approve herceptin for early stagers and tykerb- so i stopped and talked to her about how important that this is pushed forward and thanked her for us who are on this now. she was very excited about this medicine so i will make sure to push whenever i see her. she's an excellent doctor ( Dr. Martino)

XOXOX
