Tykerb Prescription

I saw my onc on Wed afternoon and we discussed the Tykerb. He will be prescribing it for me, but apparently I need a MUGA and an EKG first, to be used as a baseline for treatment.

I was surprised, but I will be getting the tests, then seeing him again in 2 weeks to get it prescribed.

I guess because it is pill form I didn't realize that there might be heart issues or risks associated with it as well.

I'm currently in the Tykerb TEACH trial so am not sure if I'm getting the actual drug or a placebo but as part of the trial I had to have a MUGA and EKG before starting and have to have a MUGA every 3 months. I'm not sure if I have to have an EKG every three months or not. From what I understand heart issues don't seem to be too common but can happen. Good luck with your treatment!

Esther-

for my clinical trial w/ xeloda/tykerb, we got an echo and ct scan every 6 weeks, and then eventually every 12 weeks....

it's so exciting to hear it's being prescribed.

Good luck w/ things,

The same with me started every 6 weeks and than to 3 months unless one is having problems. I think it is too soon to know about the heart and they are being cautious until they know more. Wishing you well. Do you know how expensive it is?? Have heard a few different quotes. hugs, Sandy

Hi Esther,

Same here for me for my clinical trial w/ xeloda/tykerb. I had to get an echo, Petscan and ct scan before I started this regimen and will need to continue doing this every 6 weeks, and then eventually every 12 weeks....

Good luck! Keep us posted.

Sandy, I have heard the quote as being $2300 a month for the Tykerb. I am currently looking into getting the prescription by mail as this seems to be the most affordable way to go with my prescription insurance carrier.

I'm still not sure how much of that amount will be assigned to me as a copay, hoping it won't be too much.

Tykerb and Herceptin

Esther,

You mentioned in a previous post that Dr. Pegram recommended you continue Herceptin in addition Tykerb. Is that the plan you ended up following?

With warm regards,

Amy

I called up GSK and they said the wholesale rate for one month supply of Tykerb is USD 3625 and is availble thru specialized pharmacies only

Amy, yes the current plan is to begin Tykerb in addition to Herceptin. I still have to get the MUGA, and EKG and get the prescription from my onc and get it filled.

I'm hoping to have everything in place and be starting the Tykerb by early April.

Esther - please keep us posted as to your status with this combination. I have my exam with my onc March 30 and hope to be able to get Tykerb with Herceptin when I finish with the Navelbine.
