Mom's follow-up
Hi guys. I apologize for not keeping up to date with Mom's status. Basically, we went to the onc, and he ordered some bloodwork. Of course, I was a pain in the butt and requested several more tumor markers, and he acquiesced. We ended up getting CEA, HER2 Serum, and CA-27.29. I should have results tomorrow. Can't say I am looking forward to reading them right now.
Anyway, if her numbers have gone up, we are gonna redo the MUGA right away, and get back on Herceptin if the numbers are OK. Oddly, he said to me, "There is a new drug out there." I said, "You mean Tykerb?" He replied yes, but it's not available. I reminded him that Tykerb was the drug that I was telling him and his staff about for the last 9 months. I think he was a little embarrassed. But at least he mentioned it. So, if Mom's numbers are up, I might pursue the Tykerb while we start her back on Herceptin. I don't yet know whether she would qualify for compassionate use. That's another project entirely. I am excited that it is getting near the end of the year, and that Tykerb might soon be generally available. I'm even more excited to hear that researchers haven't put down their microscopes with the development of Tykerb abd Herceptin when it comes to HER2/neu BC, and keep looking for more and better targetted therapies. I feel optimistic that we are closer to the answer. I'll report back with Mom's numbers soon. Take care all. Tom |

Tom -
Glad to read your post with the SMILE face attached. You may have been referring to the "new drug" as Lapatinib, or the doc may just have forgotten. Anyway - you know the story about the "Squeaking Wheel" very well by now, so I am sure the doc has a connection with your Mom and Tykerb/Lapatinib imbedded into his subconscious with you standing over him with a big stick ... Will ask for special good news blessing on your Mom's markers and other tests. At least you got the HER2 serum test out of them. This seems to be going a little easier for many of us now. This test takes a little longer to come back as an outside lab does the analysis. |
Tom,
Just a comment- I hope your determination in seeking the best medical treatment for your mom never ends. It is obvious that her onc has learned from both of you. Although some oncs are better informed than others, your mom's case is an excellent example of how doc's and patients need to make decisions together and meet at least halfway in order to find answers. My best to you and your dear mom. Warmly, Maria (MTS) |
Hi Tom,
It is good to see your smiley post.I too am excited that Tykerb will soon be released for so many that need it. I hope the markers turn out fine. Your mom is certainly lucky to have your care and interest. |
Tom,
Fingers, toes, eyes all crossed that you will get good news on all your Mom's tests. I wish I had somebody like you to help me give 'em a good push! I was able to get tumor markers done, you've inspired me to maybe take another run a the Her2 serum test... Prayers too... Let us know how it goes. Chris |
Hello Tom;
Thank you for taking a minute to keep us posted; we all appreciate hearing an update; especiallly when it is good news. Love Kim from CT |
Tom, that's good you got some feedback from the onc on the Tykerb issue, even though a little disapointing he didn't that you've only been on about it for the last 9 months! But, as long as it's now on the radar screen, it's good. Thanks for the update.
