TORONTO, CANADA — June 23, 2006 — Because of the high rate of recurrence of bone metastases in some cancers, such as breast and prostate, a specialized clinic dedicated to providing radiation oncology treatment is necessary, a study presented here suggests.

Delivering data at the meeting of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society for Oral Oncology, Dr. Jackson Wu, a radiation oncologist with the Tom Baker Cancer Centre/University of Calgary, said the existence of a "fast track" clinic will respond to an unmet need of diagnosing and treating patients who are having repeated bone metastases. The clinic covers a territory of 1.5 million people.

"This is a one-stop shopping approach," said Dr. Wu, in an interview with Doctor's Guide. "The metastases occur at different locations of the body and different times, so it's important that the patient be referred back to the radiation oncologist."

Dr. Wu said that patients as a matter of course are referred to their medical oncologists after radiation treatment and then would not typically have speedy access to treatment if they had a recurrence.

The point being is that the guy putting together your radiation tx plan IS an oncologist and these guys are under-rated in their impact and knowledge. Gotta love Canada
