HOW MANY HER2 people are thin??

sherri 04-27-2006 06:00 PM

Before my dx I was 140lbs 5.6", 21% Body fat, I was very fit and muscular, I've gained 25 lbs after chemo and Herceptin. My last herceptin is in 2 weeks and I'll try to loose the extra! I coudn't say I was thin like Kate Moss!

I was very thin through my teen years and early marriage, and then gained weight with my babies. Two years ago when I was DX'd with Her2 I weighed 50 lbs more than I do now. I immediately lost all desire for sweets and dairy with the chemo, lost 50 lbs very fast and have not gained any since. In fact I still dislike really sweet things, even bananas, which I used to love. So I am very thin now after herceptin. I don't know if most people are or not, and if in my case it is because of the chemo and a drastic diet change or the herceptin, or losing appetite. So there is my experience for what it is worth. As always it is interesting to see what experience others have had, and we learn so much from each other! Hugs, Tricia

Always Thin

Have always been the correct weight for my height and in fact about ten pd.
under...since being dx. have gained about ten pds. Question is it normal to
gain weight while on chemo/and/herceptin?

Thx
Jean

I was not thin. I was 40 lbs overweight (probably 50) but I have lost 40 lbs since diagnosis. I actually dieted through chemo and walked as I attributed being overweight as one of the "straws" (straws that break the camels back). I lost by eating right and portion control. I weigh the highest weight for my height and feel I have 10 lbs to go (which I have been trying my hardest at for many months. I am hoping to break thru the plateau).

Kind regards

Becky

Is Herceptin suppose to make you gain weight? I asked my oncologist and he said "no". It was the steroids that were given along with the Taxotere. He said if I exercise and eat right, I should easily get back into shape. I've already lost a couple of pounds. I'd just hate to think that Herceptin makes you fat because I'm going to be on it a long time...sherryg683

I have not gained wt. with herceptin, after A/CYT. &12 weekly taxols with herceptin. But, I watch what I eat. My sister gained wt. with her chemo because of the steroids she received with her treatments 6 yrs. ago. The Onc. told HER that she would gain rather than lose. She also had trouble losing while on Tamoxifen, even dieting and exercise. She is now on aromasin(sp), and has been given a small #of diet pills to give her a boost to lose. kat

Tricia,

Sherri, How long have you been on herceptin?? Did you have a mas. and A/C with Taxol or Taxotere?? Did your cancer reoccur? or, was your herceptin given with or after major chemo.?? I had a mas., A/C, 6 Taxols weekly without herceptin until my Onc.said it was approved for 1st x HER2+. Then the last 6 taxols included herceptin with 6 weekly after that and radiation. Now, I'm on a maintenance of a year of herceptin until around Aug.-----unless my Onc. continues it longer.
ANYTONE, know if herceptin is being used for 1st cases MORE than 1 Year??? kat
