Vitamin C: Possible Cancer-killing Promise

High-dose intravenous vitamin C may be effective in treating cancer, newly published research indicates.

Studies during the 1970s first suggested administration of high doses of ascorbate might provide a clinical benefit for treating cancer, but later studies using the same high doses found no benefit.

However, researchers now say the original studies used intravenous and oral ascorbate, while subsequent studies used only oral administration. Recognizing those differences might account for the disparate clinical outcomes, Mark Levine and colleagues at the National Institutes of Health reexamined intravenous ascorbate therapy in cultured cancer cell lines.

The researchers found ascorbate killed cancer cells at concentrations that would only be achievable through intravenous infusion. Normal cells were not affected by ascorbate at any concentration.

Additionally, the scientists report ascorbate treatment led to the formation of hydrogen peroxide, a chemical that can kill cells, suggesting a potential mechanism for the therapy.

The research appears in this week's online, early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

I think this one needs to be properly tested first. I knew someone (pr-/er-/her2-) who tried IV vitamin C therapy after failing on taxotere therapy and she went downhill really rapidly on it. Perhaps it was just a coincidence, but I really think this one needs testing before people get too excited about it.

I don't believe in "one-shot cures" anymore. Vitamin C has been tested to death with marginal results.

I have a friend who has Hepatitis C and IV Vitamin C was suppose to be a cure for this as well.

Vit C IV as complementary therapy?
It seems this article is somewhat misunderstood, as is my reason for posting it as well.
I agree this would not be a cure and I don't think that's what
this study is indicating. Also agree one study means little, but what
about complementary treatment of high dose VIT C
in cancer? Anyone know of anyone who was helped with this combo?
Does it interfere with Herceptin?
I understand there isn't much going on in CAM with cancer,
it seems to be mostly conventional or alternative, not both. Really sad.
A naturopath recently told me that I would need to take all responsibility
for my treatment,( supplements, diet, gradual detox) should I decide to consult with her while on Herceptin.
Any thoughts on this? Has anyone here tried this route?
