Yes, I've tried both. I use New Skin a lot, it works fantastic on small splits if you catch them right when they start. But my splits sometimes get so large that weeks of bandaging is required. I have one now that's been (re-)bandaged thrice daily for...mmm, 16 days. I'm seriously considering seeking stitches for it, which sounds ridiculous but affords me a laugh (at myself). Thanks for this hint, though - and I'll take all others that come along.

PS to other skin sufferers: it's annoying to keep up with, but wearing gloves -I keep boxes of those disposable ones around - to avoid detergents of any kind, dishwashing, hand clothes washing, scrubbing the tub, or the need for detergents: cleaning the litter box, etc., is helpful for avoiding splits. My dermatologist says use Crisco; the other lotion I use besides shea butter is called Udderly Smooth Udder Cream, Walmart, another animal-intended product that works well on humans.
