Sue, you may or may not see this, but since I am going thru the same thing, I thought I would go ahead and post. I have looked into CyberKnife at Georgetown, but since Gamma is available locally, my onc wanted me to at least go thru the consultation process with the radiation oncologist and neurosurgeon here. I saw 1 yesterday and 1 today. They were both very impressive drs who gave me all the time I needed to ask questions. The rad/onc had no experience w/ Cyber, but the neurologist was very familiar with it and had practiced a similar procedure elsewhere. His opinion is that the Cyber & Gamma produce the same results and the choice wd be up to me. Have to admit that much as I hate the idea of "the halo" being attached to my head, I also don't like the idea of the long trip to G'town. Esp when it's likely to be required more than once in my future. I appreciated his candor. The neuro guy also said that brain mets is very treatable and is not often the cause of loss of life. HE ALSO RECOMMENDED A REGULAR MRI OF THE BRAIN, which I absolutely can't wait to tell my onc. I haven't decided which procedure to do yet but will have to asap. My husband and sister vote for the local Gamma. I did ask if I cd be sedated and the neuro guy sd sure (sedated but not knocked out)...just ask for it. My nerves will be frazzled whichever way I go and I definitely wd like to have something to take the edge off. Pls keep us posted about your journey thru this, and feel free to email me if you like. Don't know about you, but I find the thought of something unwanted in my head pretty awful!
Best of luck to you, Jackie |
Thanks for this, Jackie. My sister who has just finished WBR may be a candiate for SRS. I looked into Cyberknife..not available in Canada. So it looks like it may have to be Gammaknife which they do in Montreal and Toronto. Good to hear that there isn't too much of a difference, though I did hear that CK is much less uncomfortable. Please let me know how it went. How many tumors are they treating?

Where do you live? I also was thinking about Cyber at Georgetown. They do something at Sinai which is a little close (live in NJ).
Thanx for the info. Su |
