Elevated AST and ALT
Hi,
I just wanted to share this in case it may help someone else ease their mind at some point. I had my 6 month checkup a week ago and my ALT and AST were elevated so my doctor wanted me to have a pelvic/abdominal CT and bone scan. The tests did not show a recurrence which was awesome news. She still wants me to see a hepatologist about my liver, and that appointment isn't until February, but I suspect it's fatty liver. She did mention an autoimmune issue and that he may want to biopsy my liver but I really don't think there is anything serious going on. I just wanted to share in case anyone else has this happen perhaps this will ease your fear. I'm so close to five years I can taste it! As always I came here first and read of others who had this happen and it was nothing, but wanted to contribute another positive outcome. |
Re: Elevated AST and ALT
So many things can influence your liver function, even a glass of wine had a week ago.
NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) is so common these days, with a majority of the American population having some degree of it. (This according to my liver specialist at Columbia Presbyterian); he also advised that coffee and alcohol are great for breaking down NAFLD, much to my surprise! More specifically, one drink for women and two drinks for men per day. My husband loved this doctor! Cheers! Karen |

Re: Elevated AST and ALT
OK, need a little help here :) What are AST & ALT? just had blood work done and can't find these listed and my doctor has never talked about them.
Thanks for any insight, Denise |
Re: Elevated AST and ALT
ALT and AST are liver function tests. These fall under the standard CBC at my facility.
Karen PS There are other tests that relate to liver: bilirubin, etc. Ask about it. |

A recently thread also has discussed about these two numbers:
