No Radiation and no chemo ???

Just had lumpectomy yesterday. Surgeon said I should consider no radiation because of my age(77). My oncologist said no chemo just Herceptine because of my Ki-67 is only 3/5%. (maybe because of my age).
Any thoughts??? Any one???

Can you give us a little more information about your situation, like what stage you are? And if You are ER/PR + or -?

Hi Mama Bexar. That's a really low Ki-67, you'd think it would correlate with a lower grade. Maybe the surgery pathology will shed some light.

Treatment decisions are always hard, but when (like yours), one's situation is unusual, it's even harder. It's not as if your provider can tell you they've looked at thousands of women in your situation and found that "x" is the best treatment. Sometimes it's no fun to be unique.

Re: radiation, I have seen studies about deferring it in older women, because it's possible the toxicities are greater than the benefit. So that recommendation is not surprising. Although didn't you say earlier that they were proposing a short, implanted version of radiation treatment? Now not even that?

Once the pathology is in, it would be a good time for a second opinion. It may not change treatment recommendations (although it could) but it will give you peace of mind, knowing that you had all options on the table. You have mentioned your age and health several times -- might it be possible to get that 2nd opinion from an oncologist who specializes in geriatric oncology? I know you said your case was presented at a cancer conference (do you know which one?), which is helpful -- but again, especially if the operative pathology is different, another opinion could be helpful.

Please keep us posted. Sending good thoughts.

Debbie, Thanks for your great reply and for taking the time to go into detail. You are a great help. I am still hoping that some one out there has had a similar situation. The oncologist ordered a mammoprint so that may give a clearer prognosis. I live San Antonio, Tx. We seem to have a plethora of breast cancer specialist. The surgeon said he was going to present at tumor conference.

Her 2 Stage 2 ; Age 56
I did not have surgery at all.
Hercepton, Perjeta, Carboplatan, and Taxotera every three weeks. I am on round 4 and the lump is less than 1CM. Started out 3.5.
I hope to be done in two more treatments. Once the lump is gone the titanium marker will be removed. Leaving in the port.
Hate the Chemo, lots of side effects and I have no hair.
I teach full time at a college, chemo has made it very difficult week one and two.

I wanted to stop after treatment 3, doctor talked me into three more. I love food and food flavors, chemo kills all food flavors. Easy to get depression, make sure to have a lot of support around you cheering you on.

I was Stage 1 Er/Pr +. I did chemo and radiation. My Dr did mention though that in the past it was common not to do either even herceptin for stage I.

If you are in good health I would get a second opinion about chemo even with the low KI score -her 2 is aggressive and you are grade 2/3. For early stage some are recommending taxol only plus Herceptin which is a "gentler" chemo
