IMPORTANT!!! End breast cancer by 2020
The National Breast Cancer Coalition has set a deadline of January 1, 2020, to end breast cancer.
This was the main topic at this year's annual meeting of the NBCC's advocacy training conference in Washington. The conference was attended by breast cancer survivors from around the country, as well as international survivors. On Tuesday, we all headed over to the Capitol to discuss the deadline with our representatives, including funding in 2012 for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Project. The NBCC is tired of what it considers as small, incremental steps to cure breast cancer and is calling on scientists from all disciplines to brainstorm for a cure. Here's something about the deadline to end breast cancer by 2020 by Fran Visco. As the president of the NBCC, she is a survivor who at age 39 and a practicing attorney developed breast cancer. At that time her son was only a few months old: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/fran-v..._b_855778.html At the conference, Dr. Slamon spoke, as well as Dr. Love, among other doctors and scientists. I was finally able to thank him personally for his persistence in developing Herceptin, and as you can imagined, he was mobbed for photo shoots by many thankful HER2+ survivors! Joan,
Thank you for posting this. Very inspiring. Setting a deadline. Well, we accomplished that by putting a man on the moon so Breast Cancer is Next and it can't come soon enough for me. Kris.... |
Re: IMPORTANT!!! End breast cancer by 2020
Thanks Joan
I also think we need international cooperation. At present we have fragmented 'bits' of research happening all over the world. It needs pulling together so we can start looking for the needle in a different haystack! In less time science has made huge leaps in managing HIV infection so the death rate has significently reduced. Sometimes it feels that we are not yet even at this stage with bc yet we have been investing billions and researching for much, much longer. Ellie |

Re: IMPORTANT!!! End breast cancer by 2020
Hi All,
For those who are interested, here are the latest releases about NBCC's "Breast Cancer Deadline 2020" campaign. The first is a blueprint for what will happen, and the second is the 2nd annual report of what has happened so far. The blueprint is a quick read. The report is an interesting read, but not quick. If you're short of time, just read the executive summary (pages 6-14). Blueprint for the Breast Cancer Deadline: act.breastcancerdeadline2020.org/site/R?i=oVgxYHz5rF9zqduUOCEEFw NBCC Second Annual Progress Report: http://www.breastcancerdeadline2020....ss-report.html If you heard about this back in 2010 and asked yourself "what's the point of just setting a deadline?", these two documents tell you that NBCC is not just saying "someone should do this". They are saying HOW to do it, and are actively working to speed progress toward the identified strategic goals. Debbie Laxague |
