Prescription medication costs are expected to rise at least 11 percent, and possibly up to 13 percent, in 2016, according to a new report on national trends and projections in prescription drug expenditures.

I think a lot of this is due to insurance. The health insurance companies are very politically powerful and they could force a reduction in drug prices. An 84 day (standard treatment of Hepatitis C with the double anti-viral drug Harvoni costs about 100,000 dollars. Each single pils costs over 1000 dollars and is worth less than a penny in ingredient cost.

The high price of drugs makes everyone totally dependent on having insurance and they more than make up for the costs of the drug with the ever increasing premiums. Eventually something is going to give.
