How long is it safe to stay on Zometa with bone mets

In Feb 2015, I will be on Zometa for 4 years. I have seen Friends develop femoral stress fx after being on Zometa for a long time (7 years). I have spaced the dosing out to every 12 weeks now, but wanted to know when I should stop.
My oncologist told me that I could stop now if I want. I have been stable on herceptin and zometa since 2011. I am afraid to change but I know that I eventually should stop. Any advice or past experience would be greatly appreciated!

Hello JK,

I developed atypical femoral stress fractures after being on Zometa for seven years. Interestingly, my infusions were only twice annually.

The information I have found indicates that the fractures occur after extended use of bisphosphonates, typically exceeding five years.
