This may be another use (besides killing stem cells) for
Metformin in cancer. The drug inhibits an enzyme called Phosphoenolpyruvate-Carboxykinase. This enzyme is a key enzyme in a process called gluconeogenesis which is the formation glucose from "raw materials. It is known now that cancer cells are "sugar starved" because of their inefficient glucose metabolism. The end product of cancer cell glucose metabolism, Lactic acid, is turned into glucose by cancer cell gluconeogenesis, and the PEPcarboxykinase enzyme plays a key role in this.
