Thanks so much for sharing that. I'm indunated with such requests. I wonder which contact I've had sold me out!! Anyway I have decided to limit my giving to very local, legit organizations that provide direct services to clients: low cost mammograms, help with living expenses and that sort of thing.

I haven't used it myself, but I've heard that GuideStar.com is helpful in checking the Non Profits they have listed.

This kills me. I have invested a lot of money and resources to filing for our 501c(3). Every dime we get goes straight into making bags for patients. These charities that abuse their 501c(3) make me sick.

There was a thrift shop, big one, that used "cancer" in its name. Everybody felt good about shopping there. Turns out they only gave a minuscule donation to cancer research and were in fact, for profit.
