A new study published on bmj.com supports the claim that the introduction of breast cancer screening in the UK may have caused more harm than good. Harms included false positives (abnormal results that turn out to be normal) and overtreatment (treatment of harmless cancers that would never have caused symptoms or death during a patient's lifetime)...

The fact that researchers cannot yet tailor treatment according to an individuals probability of recurrence, whether late or early, means over-treatment will continue to occur. However, why throw out the baby-with-the-bath-water certainly until the above is refined or a better method of detection has been established?
