A friend of mine just sent out an e-mail warning about dental x-rays and how to prevent the harmful effect to the thyroid. I wondered how many of our members were familiar with 'thyroid guard':

Thank you, Jackie. I go to the dentist next week, and I just had a CT scan. The scans are one thing I do not like about being on this study. I am going to let the CT people know that I want a guard during my next treatment, and I will request one Tuesday when I have my teeth checked.

I know about this. My dentist always uses one.

I had a dental appointment just last week to have my teeth cleaned. Prior to the appt, I had also received the email regarding thyroid cancer from x-rays, and the advice to be aware of the type of apron used to protect you from the x-ray.
When an apron was put on me, I asked about the thyroid guard. She said "Oh, we have one like that that wraps around the neck, but we don't use it very often. Would you like to use it?" I said yes, and that was that.
Why don't they always use the apron that offers more protection from the xray? I don't know. I guess we need to stay diligent about looking out for ourselves.
