Brca1 & brca2 ?

I need to know anything about this BRCA testing,Is this something readily available,do I need it if I have already been dx'd w/breast cancer? Is it expensive ? will insurances consider paying for it? what does the results mean if tested? would appreciate some input.Joanna J

I had it done years ago and my insurance paid for it because my onc recommended it, since I had had thyroid cancer 20 years earlier. (It was quite costly then so glad it was covered). It was done in a very professional and thorough manner. My result came back negative for one and a variant for the other which was reclassified as negative about 2 years ago and I was contacted once again with the updated result. I believe there are even more mutations that they can check for now. I was glad to get the info as I have two daughters.

First of all you would probably have a consult with a geneticist so it can be explained exactly what it would mean if you are positive for the gene. This is a very important and informative consult to have. As far as insurance compensation goes, I believe if you have a strong family history, it should cover.

Testing for the BRCA mutations can supply you with information that could affect your treatment/surgical options. If you have children the test will provide your family with a bit more direction in regards to their own screenings.
