View Full Version : Joe passed on this evening

Hi, everybody. My name's Danielle, and I'm Christine and Joe's daughter. I might have met some of you over the past few years at many of the events our group has attended. And those of you who I haven't met, I just want to let you know how proud my parents have always been to be among a network of such amazing, inspiring, and forever enduring fighters. They've talked about so many of you like you're dear, old friends -- many of you they haven't even properly met!!

I just wanted to let you know my dad passed on tonight. He'd been fighting his own battle with stage 3 lung cancer, diagnosed in January, and as his primary caregiver, I can say the past few months have definitely been a battle. My father was always such a delightful and motivated human being, as if that weren't so evident by this group, and just know there wasn't a month that passed where he ever lost his smile. (The last time my family was all together was my mom Chris's birthday on Wednesday the 4th. Dad made an amazing seafood linguine, and it was so nice to have an afternoon with me, my mom, dad, and sister all together. And just a few days ago, during a home nurse's visit, he stuck out his tongue and mooned me!) And just know our lovely little dog, Belle, is trying her very best to keep our spirits lifted through such a difficult time. And that he died peacefully here at home with my mom, his sweetheart of 27 beautiful years, by his side. There's no doubt he's an honorary HER2+ angel.

Much love to all of you,
Danielle

I am so shocked and upset to read this post and I know everyone else on the board will be.
I had no idea that your dad was ill and fighting his own battle against this illness, but I suspect that would be the way he wanted it.
My sincere condolences are sent to your family at this very sad time. Your dad has left a legacy that will always be remembered. His work in our struggle against breast cancer will never be forgotten.Your parents have been an inspiration to so many in ways too numerous to mention.
I am sending prayers and comfort across the pond for our new honorary HER2+ angel and his wonderful family during this time of great loss.

Danielle, I couldn't sleep tonight so decided to check in on the board and my heart just sank when I saw your post. It's through tears that I write this. I am just taken back and in total shock...I had no idea Joe was fighting lung cancer. I just hate this damned disease...I lost my mother to advanced lung cancer 3 yrs ago so I know how difficult this had to be on you, Christine and the family. Your Dad put so much into this board for all of us...I don't know what I would of done without this board. Your father was an amazing man and loved by all of us. My heart is breaking and I can't stop the tears.

I just can't even begin to tell you how truly sorry I am. Joe always made us feel like part of the family...oh how I'll miss his posts. I never got the privilege to meet your dad in person--but he had such a big presents on this board I feel as though I knew him. I'd always hoped I would get a chance to meet him and Christine at one of the ASCO conference or other events. He was always there to help anyone that needed it. He has jumped in and helped me several times when I really needed it. He had his serious side and we also saw what a great sense of humor he had. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers at such a difficult time. My sincerest condolences to you, Christine and family. (Joe you will be missed!)

My Sincerest Sympathies.

Danielle,

I'm in such shock and had no idea your Dad was ill, when I saw your subject line I had hoped this referred to something else.

My tears are falling as I write this, I had never met your Dad or anyone on this site, but know in my heart a dear friend is no longer with us. I'm so very sorry, please give your Mom a ((((hugs)))) from me, and please know your dad made such an impact on so many lives across the world.

My very deepest condolences to you and all your family. xx

Danielle. I also am so shocked and I am crying. Joe brought hope and strength to our HER2 community. He did so much for us. He defined himself as a "proud webmaster" but we were the ones to be honored to have such a guide. You can be proud of your father. We did not know what you and the family were going through. My thoughts are now with you and our dear Christine. Joe is our Chief Angel.

Danielle - I'm just stunned and numb at reading this news. I had no idea Joe was ill even. He has been such an amazing advocate, support, kind and gracious and giving to all of us with this work on this site and fighting for better cancer treatments. And from your post it sounds like he was an amazing spirited funny and loving dad and husband. My deepest sympathy to you and to Christine and the rest of the family. Pam

Danielle,
I can only echo what everybody else has already put so eloquently in words. I've only been a member on this board for a short time but your dad has created a great legacy, helping countless people. I think he can look down from heaven and say "yes, I've run my race well". My deepest condolences for your loss. May god comfort your hearts.

I am so sorry to read this news....I just spoke to your Dad last week on the phone, I knew he was fighting the lung cancer, we spoke of how he had just gotten out of the hospital with pneumonia..he was so positive...not ever IF I beat this but when....his voice was raspy from the radiation, but he was enduring all the things most of us have endured like a trooper....and not wanting to share this with the group...not wanting to add his own burdens to ours...I think there were only a handful of us that he told, and he did not want everyone to know, so as not to disrupt the Her2 Community.

You Dad/Husband is a hero to all of us....and yes he is a Her2 angel, the leader of the Her2 angels....his presence and love for all of us will be sorely missed.

RIP Joe, you have earned peace after helping so many...tears will be shed everywhere for you today.

Danielle,

I just don't know what to say...I am in total and utter shock. Your Dad was such a wonderful, caring and kind man. I can actually see why he would not have let us know what he was going through himself--just another selfless act on his part.

My heart breaks for you, for your Mom, for all of us and for all of the women who come here in the future who will never know what a great person he was.

Big hugs and much love,
Krista

Hi Danielle
He was a true gentleman and we will miss him dreadfully. He was such a rock for us all even all the way "down under". Did he have any words for us? You know tears will be shed for him all over the world. Praying for you all.

Danielle and Christine,

Like almost everyone else here, I had no idea that Joe was ill, and am shocked and saddened by this news. His gift and his legacy to us of this community will ensure that he is never forgotten by those of us affected by this disease. I wish I had words to tell you how sorry I am that he was taken from us so soon. I hope you will find peace in knowing how loved he is by so many of us that he touched and never met. You are all in my thoughts.

I feel so very sad. . .. Thanks to your father (and husband) that I found this site. It helped me more than you could ever know. It still does.

He was a God send. I type with tears for a man that I had never met but feel like I have known for years. . . .

My love to you all.

Christine, Danielle, Deborah,
I am so sorry to hear this terrible news. I had the opportunity to speak with Joe about 2 months ago and could hear that he was quite ill but remained full of a positive spirit. He continued to speak only of the multitude of future plans he had for this group. I hung up from the call truly inspired by his attitude. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you during this difficult time.

Rest in Peace Joe. You will be missed.

I also spoke with Joe last weekend and had no clue that this turn of events would take place. He was positive and in excellent spirits. He seemed to have put his setbacks behind him. I have know since the beginning of the year that Joe had been diagnosed with lung cancer. He did not want to burden the group with his problems. He was like that, thinking of his family and his Her2 family before himself.

He was always there behind the scenes. He is one of a kind and his loss will be evident to all those who were touched by him. I am truly at a loss for words.

All my love to Danielle, Debra and Christine

Dear Danielle,

Although I am new to this group, and being a male with this disease perhaps the oddball too, Joe welcomed me and answered my every question as if I was somebody important and worth the effort. He made feel like I was part of this family too. I am saddened to have lost his support and encouragement. But the loss I and the others in this group feel because of Joe's passing is so small compared to what you, your sister and mother are feeling today. Please know that my heart goes out to you all.

I am so shocked and saddened by Joe's Passing. I had no idea he was that sick. I thought of him all week. He posted something about the doctor not wanting him to travel on Christine's birthday post after he wrote about what they had to eat for her birthday. He promised to write over the weekend and let us know what was going on with his health, but he never had the chance.
Sympathies and big hugs to Christine and their family.
Joe, one of our fearless leaders will be greatly missed, but his spirit will always be with us and this site.
He has always been loved by us and many others.

Danielle - Thank you for your bravery in posting your father's passing. I know how hard that is having my father pass away over 2 years ago - it still hurts.

Joe had informed me as well of his illness. He did not seem too well last December at the San Antonio conference and I was keeping tabs on him a little. He called me about 8-9 days ago when he came home from a short hospital stay.

He had plans and was going to call me back with further info. Which now I wish I had followed up instead of waiting - but on the other hand - maybe he took a quick turn for the worse and it would not have been a good idea to call. We never know.

His upbeat attitude seemed to mask what was happening. He talked about getting in to a vaccine trial for lung cancer.

My first thought was for Christine. Joe has been such a faithful and loving husband for so many years. Chris is a realist and knows that cancers can have their own way, but this is such a terrible, cruel , ironic blow.

Chris - you and your girls have a whole extended family out here in the wide world who send their love and condolances.

As Joe told me recently: "The site is pretty well running itself, and, as I have had to step back, I am proud of the way the members are behaving and helping one another." The attitude and pride filtered through this forum from the top!

I am shocked, stunned and like many others I had no idea that Joe was ill. The "proud webmaster" has touched all of us. I had to read the news twice and then cry. I always hoped that Joe and Christine would come to France and visit and that perhaps I could show them a good time to try to show them how very, very much I have appreciated what they created, how amazing it is and how very, very much it has helped me. I am so sorry. I now have lost 3 good friends to lung cancer this year.
My heart goes out to Christine, Danielle, her sister and Joe's family and friends.
I am sorry I never had the opportunity to meet this exceptional man but I will never forget him.
Please accept my deepest sympathy and love.

Like all of us here I am absolutely devastated by the news of Joe's passing so suddenly. How like him to keep all his own struggles to himself! This website is a priceless gift he gave to all of us and there aren't words enough to express what it has meant to us. I know it brought him joy too and I hope all of you know how grateful we are and how much we also feel the loss of this very special man who was your husband and father --and, we feel, our friend and advocate. Please accept our heartfelt condolences and love and know that many, many prayers are being sent your way. Thank you so much, Danielle, for taking time in your own grief to let us know. I am so sad. I remember Joe when he and Christine visited New Jersey a few years ago. A small group of us on the Board got together at a wonderful Italian restaurant. Joe sat back and looked a little stunned while the women Her2 survivors talked, talked, then talked some more. I felt a little guilty afterward, because he didn't get much chance to say anything. I had no idea he was fighting his own battle with this rotten disease. God Bless Joe, Christine and their family.

And all of my Her2 sisters

I have no words, only tears. But also smiles - I can so envision Joe sticking out his tongue and mooning you!

Joe was so relentless in his advocacy - he was like a tsunami that nothing and nobody could stand against.

And always, always....so alive!!!

I feel like I know you, Danielle and Deborah having heard all his tales at San Antonio. And I'm smiling still at his stories of how he wooed Christine!

Wishing all of us, but especially you, love and comfort.

Like most of you, I'm stunned. And crying. Joe was The Man. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I haven't been able to visit the site as much as I'd like to, due to computer problems, and just yesterday I was thinking about a PM Joe sent to me awhile back about my avatar pic. He liked it and it reminded him of a pond in Jersey that he used to go to. From time to time I would make little joke postings on the site about Joe and I getting together for a few beers and a couple ribeyes off the grill, and I always hoped that one day we would. Even though most of us never met him, you could just feel that heart of gold shining through in every post he made. He was truly an amazing man and will be missed.

Danielle,

I'm sorry to hear this news. Your dad sounded very upbeat when I spoke with him in June even though he wasn't well.

Please tell your mom that my thoughts are with her and your family. I'm glad I stayed with you and her in Chicago, but was disappointed that your dad was not well enough to attend ASCO. I enjoyed meeting your parents for lunch a few years ago in New Jersey.

Standing with my her2 sisters and brothers, I, too, say THANK YOU to Joe and you his family for sharing yourselves the way you have. Joe and Christine gave of themselves so unselfishly and always with graciousness and love for others. God speaks of "not letting your left hand know what you are doing" (Matthew 6:3) reminding us that doing good deeds does not have to be announced....your Father in Heaven knows what you are doing. That was their style........it doesn't surprise me at all that Joe wouldn't want to "burden" (he would see it as a burden) others with His illness.....his way is to do for others and not want attention drawn to himself. That always came through loud and clear when reading his posts.

God's Peace and comfort to you Danielle and your precious family! May memories of the good man your father was be what brings you smiles.

Love and blessings,

Christine, Danielle and Deborah,

Even when I knew Joe was not doing too well, this news comes as a hard shock to me. Joe was definetly our leader not just for the Her2 group, he was a real motivator to work on the Latinas con Cancer de Seno group in which we are still working hard. Both you Christine and Joe have marked my life for ever, you made me see beyond breast cancer, you both show me a world of companionship, love and understanding with and for other 'sisters' with breast cancer. I am sad, very sad, but I am sure he will be watching over us. God bless you girls and I send you a hug with all my love from this part of the world.

I can not believe this - I'm totally in shock. At 3 am I was still on the computer writing an e-mail to a friend in Southern California. I was just now going to step into the shower when I glanced the title of this thread. Needless to say, my shower was postponed.

Joe has lived an amazing life giving selflessly even when he's waging his own battle against (lung) cancer. Life is indeed so, so 'not fair'...

My deepest condolence to the family (our family) of Joe. What an amazing person! What an amazing life!

This is such heart wrenching news. I had no idea Joe was ill, but am not surprised that he wished to spare others any concern.

I never had a chance to meet Joe in person, but worked with him over the last year developing the new website. I know he was very proud to go live with the site in January. It is his legacy.

The work that Joe and Christine have poured into this site has grown into a source of knowledge, support, friendship, love and sometimes refuge for so many of us.

My thoughts and prayers are with Christine and the girls and all who were enriched by Joe's outreach.

Like for all the HER2 sisters, it's a loss of a man I've never met and known personally, but always felt close and connected to. He has touched so many lives with the way he was. The very first time I posted on this site, Joe emailed me right away asking where we are receving treatment. He wanted to talk to Roche representatives about programs to finance my mom's treatment. Mom's Drs here also talked to Roche and we eventually ended up receiving 4 Herceptin infusions free of charge.

I've always reminded myself of Joe's signature "Advocacy is a passion". Joe is a person I want to be like. He will be sorely missed!

Sending warm hugs and prayers to Christine and all the family.

P.S. I curse this damn disease!

I consider myself one of the lucky ones from this site who had the privilege of meeting Joe. Loren (my husband) and I attended ASCO this year because of Joe’s treatment. He did not tell many about his fight because he did not want to burden anyone. He was so sure he was going to beat lung cancer and did everything he could to do just that.

I remember talking with him going to ASCO the first part of June. His voice was raw and he was coughing but this attitude was so positive. Just two weeks ago he sounded so much better, stronger and (as always) planning for our sites future. We will never understand all the connections he made in our behalf. He knew everyone in the breast cancer world and they knew him by name. He is irreplaceable.

My heart is so sad for Christine, Danielle, and Debra. He was an amazing man, father and loving husband. I am sure he is wearing his Hawaiian shirts & eating Bavarian Cream Dunkin Donuts while advocating for us on high. His dedication to Christine and to this website they founded - UNFORGETABLE.

Christine, Danielle and Debra,
I am so sorry for the your loss of a wonderful husband and father.

There are very few people that have so positively touched the lives of so many. A word of heartfelt appreciation to both Christine and Joe for all of their years of work in support of the HER2 cause.

I am confident that upon Joe's arrival to heaven that he was greated and embraced by all of the HER2 angels that proceeded him. Hoping that thinking about the scene makes you feel the warmth and love. I also know, that have one more advocate up there and am encouraged more than ever that our prayers will be heard.

Love and Appreciation ....Lori

Through my tears I want you to know how loved he was by many of us who never met him other than here. I will pray that not only Belle but God will hold you in His arms through this time of sorrow and know that surely you will meet him again in heaven.

What a loss. I was always amazed at the loving gesture Joe made to Christine by setting up this website. I have learned so much...and have even found myself thinking how blessed I am that my cancer was HER2+. That blessed feeling came from all the knowledge I have gained through this website. Christine and family - my thoughts go out to each and every one of you.

I had the privilege of meeting Joe,Christine and, I believe it was Danielle, at ASCO 2009 and I was so happy to finally meet the amazing Druthers.

I am heartbroken for Christine and her family and for this community which he fashioned with his own hands

Eternally grateful to have met you Joe and for all you have done to keep people like myself alive. I wish we could have returned that favor.

My sincere condolences to all who knew and loved him,

Dear Christine, Dannielle and Debra,
Such sad news. You already know how much Joe meant to so many. How proud you can be of him, a man who gave his entire heart and soul to many.
Truly an angel to all of us.

So like him to keep his own illness quiet so as not to upset others. We do not get to meet many amazing
people, I am honored to have met him.

For Joe...

I had an urge to put some feelings aside and log into Her2 tonight. I am at a loss for words seeing that one of my favorite Angels has passed. I guess there are no words to describe what he meant to Ed and I. So as I sit here with tears in my eyes and I hope that you can fathom the sincere sympathy I express for a man who saved so many of our lives. So sorry to have us all mourn a man who brought us all together. Hugs to us all as we heal from this monumental loss.

Blessings to your family in this hard time.

Dear Christine, Deborah and Danielle,
I logged on tonight at the urging of a friend and I am stunned by this kick-in-the-gut news about your Joe. I thank this kind man for helping me climb out of the deep dark bucket of despair when I was first diagnosed with metastatic disease ... 6 years ago. I wish fervently I could have done something for him.
In the corner of my mind is a memory of the year I joined Joe and Christine at an ASCO conference. I was struck by the kind concern Joe had for Christine; asking doctors for their opinions, Joe was ever hopeful and optimistic...and clearly in that deep kind of love with Christine often yearned for but not so often achieved.
I loved hearing Christine's story when we had the good fortune of being warmly welcomed by both Joe and Christine at dinner, when I flew from Connecticut to Seattle for the vaccine trial. Who could ask for more hope than that?
Joe; you are in the loving arms of scores of Her2 angels; I have no doubt they are all tenderly escorting you on this labor and delivery into new life, with joy in their hearts.
Christine, Deborah and Danielle: such a wrenching loss for you; Joe who stood shoulder to shoulder with Christine; indeed with all of us; only to have him torn from your life. Is there condolence for you knowing how much he was loved by so many?
May God's love help you find peace as you mourn the loss of this man who clearly loved you all so very much.
Love Kim from CT

Copying Danielle's message from her new thread: Information About Joe's Memorial and Our Family's Wishes (http://her2support.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46384) so all will get an e-mail notification:

First off, I just wanted to thank all of you so much for your support and kindness. That's one of the best parts of this message board, and Dad would be so proud to see just how warm you've been to our family during such a sad time no matter what distance stands between all of us. The camaraderie this website and other support groups have achieved is so inspiring, and I know Dad was glad to be a part of that.

The visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 17th from 5 - 8 PM at Eternal Hills Mortuary in Oceanside. The memorial will be at 10 AM on Wednesday, August 18th. I was able to get our family priest to officiate for us, and I have to say, the place he'll be buried is so incredibly beautiful, right beside the historical Mission San Luis Rey overlooked by a statue of Our Lady of the Assumption and underneath a gorgeous 'fountain' of cascading roses. It's such a beautiful sanctuary, and I know he would have loved it too.

Also, I know a lot of people have been asking about flowers, gifts, etc., and after talking that over with my sister and my mother, Christine, we all decided it would be best to request donations to the organization instead.

You should be able to access a way to pay online through our Make a Donation link on the front page. However, if you'd like to send a donation or even just a card with a few words for our family, you can send it to our address:

6973 Mimosa Drive
Carlsbad, CA 92011

Thank you once again for all of your love. I'm hoping some of his more local HER2 'sisters' can attend one of the services this week. I know my mom would really love to see you.

As Daddy always signed, 'Love and light'.

I'm so stunned and sad. I've been away from the Board for a week and when I logged on yesterday, I could hardly believe what I was reading. It's taken me another day to find the words...
I was only 33 years old when I was diagnosed 8 years ago, Stage IV with this disease. I was lost and very scared and this community- created and nurtured by Joe, inspired by Christine- took me into their arms and every day since have offered me guidance, courage, hope, knowledge and an endless supply of comfort and friendship. What gift.
Where would any of us be without each other, under Joe's watchful eye?
To Christine, Danielle, your family and family of friends, may you find peace in knowing how much Joe and you have all impacted my and all of our lives and the legacy you've created will live on with each of us continuing to offer guidance, courage, hope and knowledge to one another and the new members who will come to walk this path.

God bless~

This is one of the reasons that I don't visit the site as often as I should. It seems like every time I log in we have lost another warrior to this horrible cancer.

I am so very saddened and shocked to hear this, as I, like the rest had no idea Joe was fighting it as well.

When I was first diagnosed and found this website, I made one post and asked if it was ok and/or proper for a male to be posting here. Joe was the first one that responded to me, welcomed me, and made me feel very comfortable in discussing my situation so I could learn as much as possible about Her2.

Other than that, I'm really at a loss for words and can only add my condolences as the rest here have. My heart goes out to you and your family. He truly was a great man for what he did for all of us here. He was also remarkable with his endeavors while fighting his own battle while keeping it secret from us.

I have such huge tears and a large lump in my throat.....this is such a shame.

God bless Joe and his family.

I am heartbroken for you all. Your father, whom I never had the pleasure to meet in person, was such a wonderful source of inspiration, hope, compassion, and knowledge. He gave so much of himself to those of us on this site. I will never forget how he reached out to me when I first found this site and started posting. His love for you girls was plainly obvious in all he did and all he wrote. I am holding you all in my heart as you grieve for this incredible loss.

I was shocked and dismayed to read about Joe. I was extremely fortunate to meet Joe, Christine, and one of their daughters at their home about five years ago. I was conducting research on the influence of leaders on virtual cultures. Both Joe and Christine were incredibly accommodating – picking me up and driving me back to the airport, feeding me, and spending their precious time in my interviews. I had no idea the amount of time, resources and dedication that Joe and Christine have spent on HER2 Support. I saw for myself the very loving and mutually respectful relationship between Joe and Christine and their love for their daughters. I remember in talking to Joe about the HER2 Support mission, he said, “This is why we’re here—to help women live longer. What else is there?” I think that says so much about Joe.

Christine, Danielle, and Debra – I am so sorry for your loss.

Dear Christine, Danielle, and Deborah,
Just as many have responded, I was both shocked and saddened to hear about Joe's passing. I have been away visiting my parents and family in Michigan and haven't been able to respond until now. Christine, your mission to establish the HER2 website along with Joe's ability and commitment to its existence created a service to those of us with HER2 breast cancer that provided information, hope, and a strong sense of community.

I have spoken positively about this website to both my doctors and nurses at the Dana Farber, and have recommended it other HER2 patients I have met. I feel uncomfortable responding publicly to online groups, and am not even a member of Facebook. In spite of these concerns, I felt compelled to join this site due to the professional and compassionate way Joe ran it. He professed his interest and care for everyone here, and responded to those who needed his help and advice. The HER2 Support Group has given me hope when I had none, and has encouraged me to live a normal and rather worry free life in spite of my recurrence to stage 4 over 6 years ago. I can not thank you enough for what you and Joe have provided for me and my family.

My heart goes out to you and your family. My thoughts are with you daily.

My condolences to you, your family, and your friends.

Dear Christine, Danielle & Deborah,

I was deeply saddened yesterday to hear about Joe’s passing. I want you to know that Joe and all of you are in my thoughts and prayers. The HER2 breast cancer advocacy community has lost a true cancer warrior. I have lost a dear friend and cancer advocacy mentor. In Mitch Albom’s book entitled, Tuesdays With Morrie, the terminally ill Morrie teaches Mitch (one of Morrie’s former college students) that the way you obtain meaning in your life is to devote yourself to loving others, helping the community around you, and creating something that gives you purpose and meaning. By this or any other measure, Joe lived a full and meaningful life dedicated to his faith, his family, and the HER2 breast cancer community.

In that same book, Morrie instructs Mitch that “death ends a life, not a relationship.” Morrie states that as long as we can love each other and remember this feeling of love, we can die without ever going away because all of the love that we have created will still remain. He states that after we die, we live on in the hearts of everyone we have touched and nurtured while alive on earth. All members of the HER2 Support Group community will forever carry Joe’s memory in their hearts and minds.

I have known Joe and Christine since 2002. They assisted me, like many of you, when my mother was diagnosed with HER2 positive breast cancer. I have no doubt that my mom is alive today as an 8-year, stage IV breast cancer survivor because of the invaluable guidance that they provided to me and my family. After I lost my 26-year old cousin to ovarian cancer in 2008, I started a website in her memory called Libby’s H*O*P*E* (http://healthinfoispower.wordpress.com). The website is based, in large part, on the many advocacy lessons that I learned from Joe & Christine. As if Joe did not have enough to do in 2009, he instructed me on a voluntary basis with respect to various methods to better promote the website. In the end, the co-founder of the HER2 Support Group not only helped countless women with that specific subtype of breast cancer, he helped unknowingly many ovarian cancer survivors as well.

Remember Me

Based upon instructions from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (“Her Majesty”), a poem entitled, She Is Gone, was recited at the Queen Mother’s funeral, which was held in Westminster Abbey on April 9, 2002. The poem recitation sparked a glut of media interest because of its simple, upbeat nature – and mystery author, who was credited in the service program as “Anon” . Apparently, Her Majesty found the poem while leafing through old memorial service books and she chose it to be read at her mother’s funeral, where it struck a chord with millions of mourners.

After the conclusion of the Queen Mother’s funeral, the BBC, The Times, and other U.K. media outlets took great effort to identify the author, with attributions going to, among others, Immanuel Kant and Joyce Grenfell. Eventually, it was discovered that the true author was Mr. David Harkins, who wrote the poem in 1981 while working at a bakery. Mr. Harkins, who now works as an artist selling paintings over the Internet, said he “couldn’t believe his eyes” when he saw his poetry published in several newspapers after the funeral.

Quite shocked by all of the media attention, David Harkins sent the original manuscript of the poem originally entitled, “Remember Me,” to Prince Charles (of Wales), and St. James’s Palace later replied thanking Mr. Harkins for explaining its origin. The reply received by David Harkins from the Prince of Wales’ office stated: “I have no doubt that it [Remember Me] will be reproduced on many occasions over the years to come. The Prince of Wales has asked me to send you his very best wishes.”

I chose to include Remember Me as part of my tribute to Joe for two reasons. First, the poem is instructive as to how Joe would want all of us to continue on with our lives, including breast cancer advocacy, energized by our kind and loving memories of him. Second, Joe would undoubtedly find great joy and humor in the fact that a talented baker from a small U.K. town became famous worldwide for his literary prowess rather than his pastries.

So, the next time that we think of Joe, we should heed the message set forth in the final line of the poem Remember Me: “… Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.”

The full text of Remember Me is provided below.

Remember Me

You can shed tears that he is gone

Or you can smile because he has lived

You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back

Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him

Or you can be full of the love that you shared

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday

Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday

You can remember him and only that he is gone

Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back

Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

[I]– written by David Harkins, Silloth, Cumbria, U.K. (1981)(Note: all female references appearing in the original poem were changed to male references)

Words escape me as to what to say. I read about Joe's passing while visiting family in Brazil and have been thinking about him, Christine, and their girls ever since. Although I have never met them in person, I come to this site on an almost daily basis from my iPhone for camaraderie, support, hope, and breast cancer news. I'm forever grateful to Joe and Christine for putting this site together and creating this wonderful community.

My heart bleeds with sorrow, but is comforted in the faith that Joe's spirit lives on through this site and has joined the angels watching over us.

Christine, you have always been my inspiration and given me much hope to continue my journey. Please know that you, Joe, and your family is loved by many, and that we're united in soul and spirit in this site.

Dear Danielle and Family,

I am speechless. I have not visited the site for some time, and when I finally decided to put my toe back in the pool I got smacked in the face with this horrible news. I am so very sorry that you and all of us have lost our hero.

I will never forget how stunned I was when a short time after I made my first desperate post on the website regarding my Mom's diagnosis, I received a call from Joe offering help and information. At that very moment, I felt my hopelessness, fear, and isolation change to hope and the will to fight. I will never forget him and Christine.

God Bless you Joe and Christine for all you have done and continue to do for those battling this disease, and those who love them. Thank you for all of your help and inspiration. May the Lord embrace you and your family.

Sincerely,
Tom

I cannot believe what I am reading. Joe...our Joe? Joe and this website have been a life saver for so many people and now we learn that he has passed away from the same disease he had helped us to battle, in countless ways. I am so very sorry. Joe's family was blessed with a one in a million husband/father and more. Praying for comfort and strength for all of you during this very sad time.

Oh my gosh...prayers for Joe's family. Joe and his wonderful family and this board...a tower of knowledge and strength. " Gently, they go the beautiful, the tender, the kind...I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned. by Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Dear Christine, Danielle and Deborah,
I am so sorry for your loss and all of our losses here on Her2 Support Forum. I had the pleasure of sharing company with you Christine, Joe and Deborah at the ASCO meetings here several years ago and what an honor it was to meet the wonderful people in person, those behind this important forum. Like many, I didn't know of Joe's diagnosis and in a way feel bad about that because, while I am sure he knew how much he was appreciated, it would have been nice to tell him one more time. I pray that all of you can find peace in knowing that Joe accomplished so much in his lifetime and leaves us all with such amazing respect for all he has done for so many. My heart goes out to all of you during this most difficult time.
With sincere condolences,
Rina Schneiderman

I was completely stunned to read of Joe's passing, and my thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences go to Christine, Danielle, and Deborah, who so generously shared their husband and father with the extended Her2support community.

My beloved younger sister passed away in August '09 after valiantly fighting the disease for 6 years, and it was the excellent information, support, hope, and love on this site that sustained me and so many others as we have struggled together with our loved ones against this disease.

I know all of us here wish we could have offered Joe, Christine, and his daughters the same kind of support he gave us through this website. He had such a gentle, kind, and wise way as he guided us and was forever looking for ways to improve the site, even when it seemed it could not possibly be any better.

Christine, Danielle, and Deborah, my deepest sympathy as you grieve Joe's passing from this world -- he is surely a powerful guardian angel now; his wonderful spirit will live on in your hearts and memories, and in the ongoing care, support and love that comprises her2support.org

Dear Christine, Danielle & Deborah
Your husband/father was such a forward thinker and inspiration to everyone. I did have the privledge to speak with him over the phone on a couple of occations my first years as a member of this site. Although this great web site was a gift to Christine, in reality it was a gift to us all. Thanks to Joe and Christine, I was able to connect with my Her2 family when my family at home was snug in their beds. I will be sending a donation to this site in memory of your wonderful husband/father. I am so very sorry for your heartbreaking loss. Karen

I have not logged on for quite a while and was just so saddened to hear of Joe's passing. I only spoke to him once about 4 years ago and he was most helpful to me. If not for this website I would never have had the kind of unbiased information provided to me nor the support.

I always have considered that cancer has a good side in that it allows us to reconcile, redirect, and reaffirm our lives in positive ways. I know Joe was already doing that way back when this website was created.

My warmest thoughts go to Christine and family. My eternal thanks to Joe. He was awesome!

Warmly,

Maria

I have not checked in a quite a while. I am devastated and wrenched in sadness on Joe's passing. I think of him as one my own, which he really was to all of us.
I am so speechless since Christine, our sister, is now without her husband and her right arm and the girls without their father.
I pray for him; and peace for Christine, Danielle and Deborah, in their hearts and mind. He was truly a remarkable man and a "father" to all of us

Dear Danielle, Christine and Family,

We all knew what a guiding light and special person Joe was to all of us. I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Somehow words are are not enough to describe this man. His spirit which has touched each one of us whether we had met him or not will continue to live on in the survivors who will continue to push forward with his work. I will never forget Joe. My deepest heartfelt condolences go out to Christine and family.

Wow, I'm more a lurker than anything and since replies to threadss come to me in email I don't always log in here. Even a newbie lurker like me knows who Joe was and how he helped the HER2/cancer community.

My deepest sympathies for your loss.

Christine, Danielle and Family,
As the others on this site, I am thoroughly shocked at Joe's passing. I think in my mind he would always be here coordinating and completing the Her2 community. So many beautiful things have been shared here about both Joe and Christine's help.. My this was a tiny site when I first started coming here and I look today at the number of people viewing and it is amazing the lives you two have touched. Thank you and my deepest sympathies to you all.

I am so sad to hear this. I hope that Joe's family members are well and are slowly, slowly healing. Though my mom has joined the other her2 angels, I still feel very attached to this board and check it from time to time. I am so thankful to Joe, as this board was sometimes all I had. I remember one time Joe sent me a personal email, I was really touched that he would take the time to compose an email when I'm sure he had many other things to attend to.
I think our time on earth is not defined by how long we live, I think it's what we do and who we touch.
