Live in Minnesota? Diagnosed with Breast Cancer in the Last 5 Years? This is YOUR Call-to-Action!
Were you diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 5 years? Have you completed all planned surgery, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy? Are you postmenopausal and overweight?
If you answered yes to all of these questions and are able to go to the University of Minnesota to participate, this may be the study for you!
Studies have found that women who are overweight or gain weight after having breast cancer are at greater risk of having a breast cancer recurrence than are women who are of average weight. But why would this be the case? That’s what researchers at the University of Minnesota are trying to discover.
This study only needs 16 women to participate, so sign up TODAY! If this study isn’t right for you, please pass it on. We want any woman who might qualify for this important study to hear about it!
What’s the study about?
The purpose of this study is to find out if weight loss increases or decreases certain biomarkers that are associated with breast cancer risk, recurrence, and quality of life. What’s involved?
If you join this study, you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will attend 12 weekly 1-hour weight-management classes at the University of Minnesota. The other group will be given an exercise plan to follow and be asked to eat only the meals that are provided for them by the University of Minnesota for 12 weeks.
Regardless of which group you are in, you will be asked to fill out a couple of health surveys and keep a diet and exercise log and, several times during the study you will have your body weight, height, body composition, heart rate, blood pressure, and fitness assessment measured. You will be asked to give blood and urine samples and undergo a body scan to measure bone density.
You will also be followed during a maintenance period for approximately 2 months.
If you choose to sign up, the researcher will discuss the scheduling of the appointment times with you directly. Who can participate?
You can join the Weight Loss and Breast Cancer Survivors study if you match ALL of these MAIN categories**:
• You were diagnosed with breast cancer (stage I - IIIa) within the past 5 years
• You have completed surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy.
• You are approximately 20 pounds or more overweight
• You exercise LESS THAN twice a week, 30 minutes at a time, at a moderate intensity level
• You are between the ages of 45 and 75
• You are postmenopausal
• You are able to go to the University of Minnesota for appointments
**Please note that the researcher may go over additional eligibility criteria before you are enrolled in the study. Who is conducting the study?
