Devastated - told weeks!!!

To finally determine why Caryn was continuing to have digestive problems they did an ERCP, which is a catheder scope down through the ducts. Unfortunately, the dr found tons of microscopic cells clogging the ducts inside the liver. This is driving her liver toward failure. If we do anything there's a risk of accelerating damage to the liver and shortening the little time that she has. We told our 16 year old daughter and 13 year old son -what a HORRIBLE thing to have to do. We're not quite ready to stop fighting yet so we've asked her primary Onc to speak to her Sloan Onc to discuss last shot treatment or a surgery. We're hoping that they can come up with something her2 related that won't compromise her liver even further. I'm devastated as it appears that my kids have less than 2 weeks to be with their mom and I have less than 2 weeks to be with the best thing that's ever happened to me outside of my kids.

Eric, that's such devastating news. I am so sorry. And I'm crossing all my fingers and toes, hoping that some kind of therapy can be found that will by her more time.

I do think Debbie L. has a point, though. These weeks are so precious. When my Mom was dying of cancer of the esophagus, almost 10 years ago, I got to spend the last week with her. She told me she felt very lonely, because my father couldn't accept that she was dying. She told me she needed for us to let her go. She felt it was her time.

So even if you do everything you can to find another treatment, please don't forget to ask her what she needs from you. Don't forget to let the children spend time with her, giving them and her a chance to accept what's going on. And give each of your children enough space to deal with this in their own way.

I am so grateful to you for finding the time to let us know. We want to be there for all of you.

This is certainly very sad news. I have followed all your posts and have been so impressed how you have tenaciously fought to find the best treatments for Caryn. As a teacher I have had children in my classroom who have lost their parents to cancer and to other illnesses. They remember their parents and speak of their memories. They remain an important part of their lives. One parent compiled a book of her favorite recipes for her daughter. Please assure Caryn that if nothing more medically can be done at this time, that her children will survive and will be OK. Caryn will continue to be a part of them for the rest of their lives. My grandmother died of cancer when I was three. She crochet a booty for my doll the day that she died. My mother recently just sent it to me. I have memories of my grandmother and will never forget her.

That being said, I my thoughts remain with you and your family, and I sincerely hope that a treatment will be found to give her more time.

Eric I have not been on these boards in quite awhile and am saddened by this news.

Before I was diagnosed I nursed my mom who had BC mets to her liver. The lesions were too many to count and the onc told me it would probably be 6 mos, tops. ( She was 75 the time ) She responded to Taxol and and lived an additional 5 years of an active life.

Caryn sounds like she is obstructed, can they do a stent proceedure which will allow the liver to drain?
Please forgive me , but I believe where there is life there is hope.

I pray there is an alternative for Caryn, and I will hold you all in my prayers.

I am praying for you both. My first instinct at reading your post, was to suggest that you ask about radio frequency ablation, thermal ablation, or interstitial laser techniques. These have seen success in primary and secondary liver tumors, and I believe have been used in other types of malignancies as well when ductal metastases have been involved. I'm quite sure my idea won't work, but at this stage everything is worth trying. It is not clear to me that Caryn really progressed when she was on the TDM1 trial. She was also on a high dose. This is a very effective drug for some patients and she may not have had the opportunity to receive the enough treatments to help her. The drug companies are very strict, but maybe her trial doctor would be willing to fight for her to be placed with a lower dose back on the trial with this new development.

I spoke to Caryn's Dr who has agreed to start Caryn on herceptin with a very low dose of Gemzar. This was the first combo that Caryn went on to when first diagnosed stage 4. It brought her 2 years of NED. Apparently the dosage will be low enough that her liver should be ok. I know it's the longest pf shots but I'm happy to have it. My thanks to all of you. Your love and support are amazing.

If she can start taking Milk Thistle tea during the day, it is very beneficial to ridding the liver of toxins and it's very soothing. I'm with Steph - glad to hear that Caryn's doctor is willing to consider another option. It's been a while since the Gemzar/Herceptin and that worked well before. Even if it is, as you say, a long shot. There's a reason why they throw hail mary passes...because sometimes they work.

Although the problem seems to be in the ducts, I also agree with trying supportive treatment for Caryn's liver. Milk Thistle, yes, beet juice is also good for general liver detox.

Hopefully the chemo will buy some time for Caryn to regain strength. I'm not completely clear on what the issue is, but is this a situation where they could put in a stent?

Dear Eric, I usually do not log on to this site on weekends but something made me give in to the temptation. I heard of this news Sunday and I have been snowed in since then; I could not wait to respond to this news and to let you know I am right here too. Candles are burning for Caryn and the entire family during this hard situation. Please know that prayers have been revised for her and repeated since I read this.


I admire your strength and devotion to this sweet woman. Also know that I have been saying special prayers for you. Dear Eric and Caryn - I am really sorry to read your sad news, but am glad that the doc hasn't given up. I've been in liver failure twice, but not for the same reasons. I was actually green with weeks to live and no chance of a transplant. Besides other treatments, my onc put me on heavy steroids to help my liver. Has this been suggested at all???? Also - Milk thistle helps cleanse the liver. I take it in a capsule form. My other suggestion is dandelion. Dandelion has long been used to cleanse the liver. it comes in pill form, tea and of course the real thing. I grew up on it (Greek) so I am use to the taste. I have to warn you it is bitter and an acquired taste. Best way to cook it is to boil (like spinach), put olive oil, lemon, garlic and salt & pepper to taste. Save the water. Strain it good and add sugar/honey or sweet-n-low. Caryne should drink several cups a day. The tea bags are easier, but I think fresh from the actual plant has more of the stuff she needs. Please tell Caryne about my story to give her what she needs most right now- hope. She already has determination (your 2 kids and you), but just remind her of that. Caryn met with the dr today to formally discuss the treatment plan, if she chooses to move forward with it. As mentioned, he proposed Herceptin/low dose Gemzar plus he's adding Carbo. He made it clear that if her bone marrow can't bounce back from the chemo onslought she may need to be hospitalized within 5-10 days after treatment and then it's just a matter of sleeping away her few remaining days in a hospital as they manage her pain. If her body can handle the chemo and it works that it can potentially add months (and possibly more in my book). My feeling is that if it can add months or help turn her liver functions around, then that opens the door to other possibilities.
I worked very hard at not "influencing" her decision but she already knew that I'm not ready to give her up yet. Well, this evening she announced to my kids and me that she's moving forward with the treatment. I'm scared but happy with her decision. I continue to be awed by her bravery!!! I also feel like because of all of you there's always a chance for that "miracle". I kind of feel that if there's enough voices yelling out than the chance of someone listening goes up. Well, the voice I heard from all of you wonderful people was loud and clear! I only hope the powers that be do as well.

I'm so happy the oncologist is going to prescribe chemo.
I know you are probably overwhelmed with advice from us, but I would like to add something about the bone marrow if I may.
I never had a problem with my bone marrow, red blood counts and white blood counts during my treatment. I took supplements and ate alot of things that are good for the bone marrow and blood counts. Other patients have also shared information with me about bone marrow soup.I will pass some of it along to you. I am not sure Caryn can tolerate it all or if you have time to prepare it but here goes-----
Bone Marrow: Bone marrow soup. Cook marrow from meat, add healthy herbs (some of them have been described and shared by others) garlic, onions and make a soup.
White blood count: fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, echinecea and astragalus
Red blood count: liquid iron, beans, spinach, real blackstrap molasses, B 12, chlorophyll tablets
I guess there are always shots from the oncologist if these things don't help. Miracles also happen.

Caryn's been doing ok. She's been tired and spends most of the day resting, has limited queaziness and some pain that the pain meds are managing. I'm hoping that this is mostly all related to the treatment and that she'll feel a bit better tomorrow. The Dr said that the treatment effects the bone marrow 5-10 days after so tomorrow thru Sunday are critical days. He said that if she's having marrow problems then she will develop pain similar to what you might feel from Neupogen (but I guess worse).
My kids have been amazing but it's definitely been hard for all of us. I can't tell you how comforting it's been to check in to this site and read the extraordinary love and care that you have all provided. If prayers work, I have to think that Caryn has a shot with all of you behind us. I know I say it a lot but, THANK YOU! You are all amazing and have made such an impression on me that I can't even express.
