My Father

Thank you to all who have sent up prayers for my father.

Wednesday morning 5:00 a.m., my stepmother was awakened by my father thrashing in bed and making a gurgling sound. When EMS arrived, he was turning blue. They were able to intubate with a pediatric tube. His tongue and throat were swollen, cutting off oxygen.

He was kept heavily sedated, on steroids, and on a vent until Saturday.

At this point he is fine physically(heart, no stroke etc.), but has some residual cognitive problems, ie. confusion about date and timelines, slight hand tremors and a "high stepping" gait. We are hoping that when all meds have worn off and he has had time to regain strength, this will all disappear. Although 78, my father had no issues prior to this.

By process of elimination, the doctors feel this was caused by a reaction to ACE(sp?) inhibitor/BP meds, although he has taken the medication for at least three years.

Has anyone heard of anything similar?

I do not know of anyone in particular that has suffered side effects like your Dad did. However, my friend's mother had to be taken off because of slurred speech and talking backwards.

I am writing today to let you know that I will add Dad to my daily thoughts when I think of you. I am so happy that your stepmom was able to help him make it through. Also, Rhonda, how great it is to hear that he has not had previous health issues. Try to take care and kiss Daddy for me, prayers are on the way!>>Believe51

I'm no doctor, but it sounds like anaphylaxis. am extreme allergic reaction that can develop suddenly - you eat shellfish for 20 years with no problem, then suddenly you get a horrific allergic reaction. I had an anaphylictic reaction to penicillan when I was 19. I'm lucky to be alive and so is your dad. God bless.

My dad came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon. Short term memory is getting better. Hoping there will be no lingering cognitive effects.

We're lucky to still have him.

Daddy is back to 100%, if not better! No retained cognitive problems, I'm happy to say. He's back to his busy schedule and happy as a clam!
