View Full Version : My Tale

The one known as "Ma" has discovered my true being, so, I must tell my tale, in accordance with "elfin" law, within three risings and settings of the golden orb, lest I wisp away. So be it...it has been decreed... Please bear with me as I pile more wood upon the crackling fire before us.....I was "born" on a night no man can remember. Our language is not yours. Your "people" seem to name things and objects whereas we do not. Everything just "is". My name in your language would be "night-watcher-runner-thinker". I will try to speak to you in your own tongue. We are not "elves", as you call us. We call ourselves the "age-nots", but we lack what you have. I've run through many nights and been through all of the streams and rivers throughout the land, but something was missing, so I ran "through-the-night" to speak with the Queen Elf, as you would call her. "Yes, night-watcher-runner-thinker?" I knelt before her. "My Queen, those I watch seem to greatly enjoy one certain day of the year....a 'birthday', they call it. May I be permitted to try one? They seem to enjoy them!" My queen gazed skyward as a meteor streaked across the sky, "they seem to enjoy that one particular day more than the others. You can go now, and do as you wish, night-watcher-runner-thinker". That is what I do now, as I wish. That fire shot through the eyes of my queen thousands of your years ago.

I think this is ACTUALLY a MEMORIAL to YOU!!

From Wikipedia: Fremont Troll

The Troll, also known as the Fremont Troll or the Troll Under the Bridge, is a piece of whimsical public art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_art) in the Fremont (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremont,_Seattle,_Washington) neighborhood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighbourhood) of Seattle, Washington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle,_Washington) in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States).
The idea of a troll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll) living under a bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge) is derived from the Scandinavian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavia) folk tale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folklore) "Three Billy Goats Gruff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Billy_Goats_Gruff)."
The Troll is a mixed media (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_media) megalithic statue, located on N. 36th Street at Troll Avenue N., under the north end of the Aurora Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington_Memorial_Bridge). Aurora Avenue North was renamed "Troll Avenue" in its honor in 2005. Despite its name, the Troll is not under the nearby Fremont Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremont_Bridge_(Seattle)). It is clutching an actual Volkswagen Beetle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Beetle), as if it had just swiped it from the roadway above. The vehicle had a California license plate.[1] (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2236)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d3/FremontTroll.jpg/180px-FremontTroll.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:FremontTroll.jpg) http://upload.wikimedia.org/skins/common/images/magnify-clip.png (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:FremontTroll.jpg)

The piece was the winner of a competition sponsored by the Fremont Arts Council (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremont_Arts_Council) in 1990, and was built the same year. The Troll was sculpted by four local artists: Steve Badanes, Will Martin, Donna Walter, and Ross Whitehead. He is interactive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactivity)—visitors are encouraged to clamber on him or try to poke out his one good eye (a hubcap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubcap)). The Troll is 5.5 m high, weighs two tons (1814 kg), and is made of steel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel) rebar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebar), wire, and ferroconcrete (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinforced_concrete). The artists have chosen to exercise their copyright to control commercial use of Troll images, however, postcards, beer, and other products approved by the artists are commercially available and use is free to non-profit organizations.
In 1998, Silas Garfield Cool, a mentally ill individual, shot and killed Mark McLaughlin, a Metro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_Transit_(King_County)) bus driver, as he was driving his bus over the Aurora Bridge, causing the bus to crash through the railing onto an apartment building some 12 meters below, directly across the street from the Troll. Cool fatally shot himself in the head after firing on McLaughlin. [2] (http://www.seattleweekly.com/news/9910/features-anderson.php) Herman Liebelt, 69, died as a result of the accident and 32 other passengers were injured. The Troll became an impromptu memorial site for the victims of the crash; mourners left flowers, notes, and mementos at its base. For a time, the Troll sported a single paper tear below his left eye.
The Troll was also featured in the movie Ten Things I Hate About You.

Lee - come to my neighborhood if you're hungry. We've got "Slow Children" - or at least there are signs on all the streets that claim we do...

Mmmmmmm, slow children. I'm going to like this neighborhood. But why would they advertise? Human life interactions are too complex for trolls.

(Aside: Don't those "Slow Children" signs negatively impact the self esteem of the children in your neighborhood? Perhaps the signs could read, 'physically or mentally delayed development pre-adults'. That sounds so much nicer, doesn't it?)

Hi Doug! It's hard to explain, but when I was a child, I had a fever. My hands felt just like two balloons....Anyhow, sorry I haven't been posting much lately. December is a very busy time of the year for me.

Don't know how I have missed this thread. Unbelievable! We are such a 'cohesive' group. There are 'wild men', 'elf', 'trolls'...

Thanks for giving me a good laugh... in this very stressful holiday season.

Marie, you're so funny! Oh, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl....

Jackie, thirty-two and a half seconds after I started this thread, I wanted to delete it, because I really don't do "as I wish", but, in accordance with the prophecy, I could not.

"Comfortably Numb"

Hello,
Is there anybody in there
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home
Come on now
I hear you're feeling down
I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb

O.K.
Just a little pin prick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
And I have become
Comfortably numb.

AND YES BILL, I WILL BE COMFORTABLY NUMB RIGHT ALONG WITH THE MIGHTY OAK TOMORROW!!
