Hi, heres some info for Herceptin users which I thought pretty amazing. Read the official report at: http://www.enh.org/aboutus/press/article.aspx?id=3104

You are all so fantastic who contribute to this website. love Dee ( Stage iv BC, mets brain, liver, lung, kidney, bones. Starting 4th month of Abraxane and Tykerb. Optimistic, but some days are very hard)

Oleic Acid Targets Breast Cancer Gene April 11, 2005 Oleic acid - found in olive oil as well as in PCA's Hi Oleic peanuts - has been shown to dramatically reduce the levels of a gene involved in the development of some forms of breast cancer.
US and Spanish research, published in the March 2005 edition of the Annals of Oncology, has provided an explanation for the observation that the oleic-rich Mediterranean diet seems to protect against breast cancer.

In a series of laboratory experiments on breast cancer cell lines, researchers showed that oleic acid dramatically cuts the levels of a cancer-causing gene (oncogene) called Her-2/neu.
High levels of Her-2/neu occur in more than a fifth of breast cancer patients and are associated with highly aggressive tumours.
Not only did oleic acid suppress over-expression of the gene, other tests on the cell lines showed that it also boosted the effectiveness of a current anti-cancer drug (Herceptin) that also targets the Her-2/neu gene.
Lead researcher was Dr Javier Menendez, assistant professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and a research scientist with the Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Research Institute.
"Our findings underpin epidemiological studies that show that the Mediterranean diet has significant protective effects against cancer, heart disease and ageing," Dr Menendez said.
"To our knowledge this is the first report that a dietary monounsaturated fatty acid previously suggested to be protective against breast cancer significantly down-regulates the expression of Her-2/neu, cutting it by up to 46 per cent."
Dr Menendez said Herceptin reduced Her-2/neu levels by about the same amount as the oleic acid however treating the cancer cells with both Herceptin and oleic acid drove Her-2/neu levels down even further, by as much as 70 per cent.
He said his team's findings also suggested that dietary interventions based on oleic acid may delay or prevent Herceptin resistance in Her-2/neu-postive breast cancer patients.

Hello Dee,

Thanks for posting this - more confirmation for taking all this stuff is great news! I have always wondered - when I was active in stained glass the best flux for soldering was oleic acid - I still wonder if it is the same thing?????

Anyway, thanks for posting this!

Have a great day!

We should find out how good olive oil is at protecting against BC by following Rachel Rays health. She practically drinks the stuff.
