I have developed a bald spot on the top of my head, bigger than a half dollar. My hair grew back so thick after chemo, now this. My Oncologist said it's likely due to stress. Has anyone else had this happen and did or do you think it will grow back. Heck, I'm going to have to break out the wigs again. I can't cover up the spot..sherry

Sherry, My husband used to get bald spots on his head, various places, including crown and back of head, lower down, about 3 cm in size. It was always due to stress. The hair would always grow back, first coming in very fine and white (he had raven black hair) and then it would finally turn black. It always happened when he was under stress, so your doctor may very well be correct. He had very thick hair and never had male pattern baldness.

Yes I've had it, mine was called alopecia (sp?). This was long before I had chemo. It was a bit bigger than a quarter and on the top of my head and noticed by my hairdresser when I was having a hair cut.

My family doc did a thyroid test because changes in hair can be related to thyroid problems and when that came back normal sent me to a dermatologist. First I got some topical corticosteroid that I smeared on it daily. That didn't work. Then the dermatologist injected some steroid into my scalp, which sounds worse than it was - that did the trick, hair grew back, same as before.

I wondered if the chemo hair loss would make it recur, but it didn't. I think you should get to a dermatologist. Saying something is due to "stress" seems a bit of a cop out to me.

Thanks, I am going to make a dematologist appointment Monday. Heck I was just there for the rash on my butt, I should have asked him to look at it then. I didn't know if a dermatologist was the one who I would go to for this, ..tks..sherry

Good, I hope it works as well for you as it did for me. Not everything that happens to us is BC related - it's just the first thing that jumps to our minds. Our oncolgists are focused - just where we want them, but sometimes we need a broader view.

Keep us posted - I'm curious.

A very good friend of mine had bald spots from stress. They went away eventually and she has a full head of hair now.
