I know this is a technical link but Bone Density is such a big subject for so many I felt it was worth posting here particularly whilst we are having a few diet threads.
The conclusion is fairly self evident - see below in red but in essence another reason to try and balance your omega threes and sixes.
AND the same old story looks promising more research needed - but who will pay for research that has no monetary profit, and indeed could reduce or at least delay treatment with medicinal profitable drugs. - see below
AND this is in a generation in their 70s so it is likely they have had a lower lifetime exposure to omega six processed foods etc.
I want to scream - WHY is follow up not funded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ratio of n–6 to n–3 fatty acids and bone mineral density in older adults: the Rancho Bernardo Study1,2,3

Results: There was a significant inverse association between the ratio of dietary linoleic acid to {alpha}-linolenic acid and BMD at the hip in 642 men, 564 women not using hormone therapy, and 326 women using hormone therapy; these results were independent of age, body mass index, and lifestyle factors. An increasing ratio of total dietary n–6 to n–3 fatty acids was also significantly and independently associated with lower BMD at the hip in all women and at the spine in women not using hormone therapy...............
Randomized clinical trials are needed to test whether fatty acids have an effect on bone. If fatty acid supplementation is effective, it could offer a safe, relatively inexpensive approach to the prevention of osteoporosis...................
Conclusions: A higher ratio of n–6 to n–3 fatty acids is associated with lower BMD at the hip in both sexes. These findings suggest that the relative amounts of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids may play a vital role in preserving skeletal integrity in older age.
