Early screening for colon cancer, such as a colonoscopy, has about a 95% cure rate if cancer is detected when cancer is still in the pollop stage and hasn't gone through the colon wall or to distant sites.
I had a colonoscopy fall of 2002 with a clean diagnosis. I was told to have the procedure repeated every 5 years as long as I remained colon cancer free.
The procedure wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The prep was easy. I just had to drink a pint size drink, 1/2 the night before and 1/2 the morning of the procedure. I could have as much clear beverages and jello as I wanted, up to the colonoscopy. I was drugged with demeral for pain, but was coherent enough to watch the procedure on a TV screen.
My mom had both breast cancer and colon cancer and died 13 years after origional diagnosis of BC. I'm not sure which cancer she had the metastasis of. It was in her tailbone so I suspect it might have been breast to bone.
If your doc can get the insurance company to approve benefits, you would be wise to have this done. I am due for my follow up. I'm not looking forward to it, as I am also going to need an endoscopy done, which is harder.
